They don’t come more mysterious, cult-like, and iconic than this Wendouree Shiraz, 2012. Ancient vines planted by A.P. Birks in 1893 produce low yields and coupled with a more hands off approach to winemaking the results⁣

are mesmerising. These wines will go the distance but it’s always worth having a little look sooner rather than later! The 2012 is a beaut, fantastic concentration, dense deep fruit flavours, and awesome tannin and all signs that this will sing decades from now! Good job I have a few more tucked away!!⁣

Is bigger better? When talking wine, my answer is most definitely yes. Aging at slower rates the large formats produce rounder, lusher wines with age yet retain freshness. What’re your thoughts... is bigger better? ⁣

Certainly no shrinking violet here, just pure Barossa class at its best. Grant Burge Meshach 2008, magnum, 1500ml of outstanding grape juice from 100 year old Barossa Shiraz vines. Awesome stuff! ⁣

Golden Autumn day complimented with the magical inky Spinifex Syrah 2018. Second bottle in week and this is rapidly becoming a firm favourite! Wouldn't mind laying a few down to see how they evolve but I think the temptation would get the better of me! ⁣

Vine Vale Grenache, one of the Juniors in the Yalumba line-up but don’t let that put you off for a second. Sweet aromas of fresh wild strawberries, cherries, cola-like botanicals. Thirst-quenchingly moreish, light-medium bodied, on the palate with the red berry fruit profile blending with whole bunch savouriness effortlessly. This will disappear very quickly!

My Italian odyssey continues with Biondi-Santi 'Greppo' Brunello Di Montalcino 2012. Another icon of Italian wine renowned for longevity, elegance and power added to the collection. 100% Sangiovese and considered by many to be the purest and most profound iteration of the Tuscan grape. Might pencil this on in for my 50th! ⁣

It’s hard to imagine that this wine is produced from 167 year old vines... planted in 1843. Putting it in perspective, in 1843 Charles Dickens published “A Christmas Carol”, Hong Kong was pronounced a British colony, and the typewriter was patented...

 Staggering to think that these very vines were planted that same year. Simply put, an Aussie icon and a total pleasure. It’s a must try 🙌🍷🔥 🍷

​⁠Now this is how you wrap up a Monday! Paradise IV, one of my favourite, semi-unknown, producers out there making seriously good wines. I heard the vineyard had been sold, if anyone knows let me know!⁠

The wine, Chaumont 2014 Bordeaux blend. Matured in barrels from Sirugue Cooperage, Nuits St George, has a stunning nose. Blackcurrant, cedar and leather, all underpinned with lovely subtle vanilla notes. ⁠It's complex on the palate. medium bodied at best with fine grained tannins and balanced acidity. The fruit, beginning to fade as the tertiary character comes to the fore, is still showing black fruits, hints of blue as it opens. It definitely needs a few hours in a decanter to fully express itself, once open it's a decent, classy drop. For my taste it's at the limit of its aging potential which is bloody great because I now have guilt free drinking ahead! Well worth trying, and I've heard the Dardel and Chardonnay are exceptional as well!⁠

. The Vice is Rollick’s cracking Eden Valley Shiraz. First up, the colour is awesome; crimson, magenta, violet. Youthful intensity on the nose, dark cherries smashed with blueberries and hints of baking spices. A fresh, youthful, exciting palate of blackberries, blueberries, dark cherry and violets, with herbal touches and soft velvety tannins. It’s smile inducing and that, for me, is the sign of a quality wine. Well played Rollick! -

This Grand Cru Pinot Noir from New Zealand’s iconic producer

_rangi is simply sublime. It’s the result of the legendary gumboot clone, a single Pinot Noir cutting taken from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy, smuggled into New Zealand in the mid-1970’s. This legend provides both pedigree and a degree of mystery to the wine.⁣

Distinctly pinot noir on the nose with lifted florals, red roses, delicious cherries, spices and savouriness all in one. You could sit and smell this for days... To taste, it’s a dream pinot. Refined, medium bodied, very long, encompassing power and finesse all at once. It’s a complex wine for sure as the dark cherry, dried fruit and herby almost stalky flavours unite and seductive your tastebuds. There’s a real energy about this wine which the flavours, acidity and tannins express from the moment you smell right through to the long, long, finish. Simply stunning!⁣

It turns out Pikes, synonymous with stunning Clare Valley Riesling, are also pretty adept at the odd red too… who’d of thought it?! The Dogwalk is a savoury, earthy Clare Valley cabernet with a touch of mint leaf and spice in amongst the mulberries and blackcurrants. Tannins, soft and gentle, are present but nicely balanced. Everything’s in the right place to pop, pour and enjoy, no messing about and it’s all the better for it.

Grange, perhaps the eternal benchmark for Australian wine on the world stage. Ultimately there’s no questioning the history, age worthiness, and the undeniable fact that year-upon-year it’s consistently of stunning quality. But... do I want a consistent wine seemingly made to a formula to achieve an outcome? Or do I want a wine that reflects its environment and the conditions of a vintage? Personally I’m a fan of variation. I love the charm of a wine that reflects the conditions of its journey from berry to bottle and from time-to-time a sip of something world class... case in point! -

Goodbye Wednesday, hello 4 day weekend and Hoddles Creek 2018 Pinot Noir. Red fruits, spiciness, and a very pretty perfume are what I’ve come to expect from this wine. It’s one of my go to wines when it’s released and this years no different! Great work, and grab it while you can!! ⁣

Funky boutique producer Alpha Box and Dice ticking all the boxes with this 2016 Shiraz / Druif blend. Spicy, peppery, five spice and blackberry aromas set the scene. Followed by, blackberry, stalky, and earthy flavours to taste. Smooth tannins wrap it all up, bloody great. Get on this! 🍷

Now, I’m no Oliver Twist, but… “Please, sir, I want some more”. This Sanglier Wines Grenache Shiraz Tannat is fresh, vibrant, and beautifully reductive. A gem of a wine that delivers bundles of fruit depth, savoury pepper notes and a smoky wildness that’s elegantly clean in a rugged kind of way. What a find. I wouldn’t hesitate to get this again!

 is easily the best sub $30 wine I’ve had for years. Vibrant, lively, deep violet in colour and perfumed to the point where I couldn’t get my face out of the glass. Everything you could possibly want from a Barossa Syrah total bargain, what more could you want! 🍷

This is one of my go-to Pinots from the Apple Isle. It’s a sizable and complex beast bursting with intrigue. Dark fruits and oak, cherry-cola smoke essence and spices with woody undertones. To get this much complexity into a wine is awesome. Constantly changing, evolving with time in the glass, resulting in an experience not a moment. Well worth testing if you love a bit of complexity! -

Giant Steps doing the business yet again! A guzzlable wine that just hits all the right spots, again. I had to tell myself to put the glass down at times! There's everything from florals, dried herb characters, whole bunchy goodness and dark cherry fruit flavours. It's a belter and I now have an empty bottle! Time to re-order while it's still around.⁣

 to wrap up Easter Monday. One of my favorite producers from the Yarra producing seriously smashable wines and single vineyard wines of epic class. This Chardonnay is lemony, tangy, beautifully juicy. An all round belter. Well worth getting your hands on! ⁣

​Bin 150 is a relatively new addition to the Penfolds range,⁣ but what an addition. From the Maranaga sub-region in the Barossa it’s a more modernist take on Shiraz, yet it retains the classic Penfolds style. Mixing French and American oak, both new and old, ensures this wine is consistent year on year and stylistically Bin 150. Great wine!⁣

For me The Standish 2016 is the best Shiraz I’ve experienced this year, no doubt about it. This, along with the Schubert Theorum, Lamella, and Relic are about as good as you can buy. Buy on sight! They don’t hang around long! Thankfully this is locked in the cellar way out of reach so I’ll get to experience it again in a few years 🍷
