🍇 70% Granaccia / 20% Syrah / 10% Barbera

Nice dark and muddy look - beautiful color. The bouquet is very dark and spicy, offering blackberry, blackcurrant leaves, black olive, sweet liquorice, tar, smoky game meat, black pepper and wood. Some Mediterranean herbs and a funny hint of tonka bean.

The palate is rich and full with medium acidity and easy going tannins, offering blackcurrant, baked plums, charcoal, vanilla, black pepper and dill in the finish.

The alcohol is definitely present on the palate, but it’s well integrated.

• Fermented in steel tanks (10 days maceration and three daily pump-over)

• Aged 13 months in 2nd and 3rd use barrique followed by 11 months in the bottle

• The variety of Granaccia is a local variant of Alicante, that’s very close to Grenache (Alicante is an old cross between Grenache and Petit Bouschet)

• In local dialect, "Pulin" means "last born," as this wine is aged longer than any other Bruna wine

Bruna, established in the 1960s, is located in the village of Ranzo Borgo (not far from Imperia and Savona) in the beautiful mountains of western Liguria with the famous terraced vineyards.

They work organically in their 7,5 ha vineyards and use only a tiny amount of sulfites when needed.

Colline Savonesi wines, like this Pulin, tend to lie at altitudes between 400 and 700 meters. All local varieties are allowed in the blend in any proportion - most often with Granaccia as the lead singer.

📍Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, Piemonte, Italy🇮🇹

Beautiful color with a fine orange rim that doesn’t seem too oxidized.

The bouquet started offering notes of port, brown apple and prunes, but after a bit of air it blew off and revealed quite a youthful and fresh Nebbiolo for its age. Strawberry (fresh and candied), dried sweet cherry, pressed flowers, orange peel, tar, thyme, mint, charcuterie and rusty metal followed on the nose. The oak is clear too.

The palate was medium(+)-bodied with well integrated tannins and a vibrant acidity. Cherry, cranberry, raw liquorice, dark chocolate, cloves, spicy vanilla and mint. A taste of chalk and iron in the finish.

• Fermented in steel tanks (8 days skin contact - brings a deep color but lower tannic level) with indigenous yeast

An estate of the elite in the Barolo area. The history dates back to 1969, when Aldo left him and his brothers (Giacomo Conterno) wine business to start his own adventure with more modern philosophies, following Angelo Gaja, meaning shorter maceration and some barrique next to the large Slavonian barrels.

Aldo Conterno passed away in 2012, leaving the winery to his three sons, France, Giacomo and Stefano, who were all working with their father during his last yeast.

They work organically without certification, farms 25 ha with very low yields - a total of 80.000 bottles pr. year.

📍Sant’Angelo in Colle, Montalcino, Toscana, Italy🇮🇹

Very old school Brunello with a bouquet slowly opening up revealing well matured notes of baked red fruits (a bit aged tawny-like), dark cherry, old leather, cinnamon, anise, dried herbs, sweet tobacco and old coffee grounds. It’s quite dusty as well and has some iron and blood-like scents coming through.

On the palate, it’s medium(+)-bodied with powdery tannins and medium acidity. Notes of dark cherry, prunes, baked tomato, cloves, oak, dark chocolate and rosemary/thyme-like herbs. The finish is long and balsamic, and the alcohol is (maybe a bit too) present. Not as floral as expected.

• Grapes are hand-harvested from the winery’s oldest vineyards (150-450 meters altitude)

• Fermented in steel tanks with indigenous yeasts

• Aged in big French oak barrels (30-50 hectoliters) for 3 years

An iconic winery in Toscana, still owned by the Francheschi-family since the establishment in 1890.

They own 600 ha of land, of which 125 are vines and 70 are olive trees, in the area next to the village of San’tAngelo in Colle, which is known as being one of the best terroirs in the Brunello di Montalcino-area.

Il Poggione is a winery with great quality, that delivers pretty much in all vintages. And the prices are not bad…

. The Vice is Rollick’s cracking Eden Valley Shiraz. First up, the colour is awesome; crimson, magenta, violet. Youthful intensity on the nose, dark cherries smashed with blueberries and hints of baking spices. A fresh, youthful, exciting palate of blackberries, blueberries, dark cherry and violets, with herbal touches and soft velvety tannins. It’s smile inducing and that, for me, is the sign of a quality wine. Well played Rollick! -

Tuesday night tidy up time and I just found this. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou’s second wine, one of my favourite producers in St Julien, La Croix de Beaucaillou (52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot). I bought it at the Chateau 3 years ago and figured it’d would be worth a punt given the quality of the 2015 vintage and the vineyard sites. At 5 years old it’s still a baby so I think I’ll dig it out in another 5.

Shiraz / Cabernet Sauvignon, if this isn’t the quintessential Aussie blend then I don’t know what is. It’s up there with the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle (better quality I might add), and yeah nah. This interpretation is Trent Burge’s Double Trouble, a blend of Barossa Shiraz form the valley floor and Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and it’s a ripper.

Elegant, rich, full of ripe fruit, plenty of power on the nose, concentrated dark fruits, trademark Shiraz Cab. Expansive on the palate. Oodles of dark fruit, cassis and blackberry with firm-ish tannins all lending to the full body and providing great texture. All feels very balanced, elegant, and actually quite fresh. No doubt this would reward some cellar time, but it’s also bloody good now!

Ultimately there’s no questioning the history, age worthiness, and the undeniable fact that year-upon-year it’s consistently of stunning quality. But... do I want a consistent wine seemingly made to a formula to achieve an outcome? Or do I want a wine that reflects its environment and the conditions of a vintage? Personally I’m a fan of variation. I love the charm of a wine that reflects the conditions of its journey from berry to bottle and from time-to-time a sip of something world class... case in point! -

It’s a rich, elegant, and velvety example of McLaren Vale Shiraz. Full of cassis and plum with generous spice, cocoa notes, and toasty oaky vanilla. Can’t argue with the quality here, and after all, what’s not to like… it’s half price! You beauty! -

Avani Rosé de Saignee, one of only a few wines I brought back from the Mornington Peninsular last month, mainly because it was so damn tasty, it’s got bubbles, and as explained by Rohit, they don’t make much of it.

Red berries, hints of bitter orange and rose petals, somewhat savoury and sweet at the same time with a fine fizz. It’s lively and exciting. It’s not pretending to be anything other than what is it… a super fun wine! Loved it!

Unblended Aussie Mataros are few and far between so I figured I should try this little turkey. First impressions are that it’s a super-rich and expressive representation of the variety, no doubt about it, and there’s plenty going on. It’s not a shy wine! Dark cherries and plums are mainstay of the fruit profile supported by savoury notes of mocha, anise, dried thyme and smoky wood chips. In summary, very enjoyable!

For me The Standish 2016 is the best Shiraz I’ve experienced this year, no doubt about it. This, along with the Schubert Theorum, Lamella, and Relic are about as good as you can buy. Buy on sight! They don’t hang around long! Thankfully this is locked in the cellar way out of reach so I’ll get to experience it again in a few years 🍷

Mario Minuto established Moccagatta in 1952 in the small village of same name located just south of the town of Barbaresco.

Today, the winery is run by Mario’s sons, Sergio and Francesco, and their children too.

Moccagatta is a modernist styled winery, using barrique for aging of which 20% are new (the rest 2nd and 3rd use) and short maceration (around 7 days).

The winery has worked 100% organically since 2014.

Needed a bit of time to let go of some oxidized “damp basement” scent. Afterwords, a “classic” aged Nebbiolo appeard (maybe a bit too oxi still) with a bouquet offering as scent of aged port with lower alcohol, prunes, cherry, sweet liquorice, (very) old books, pencil shavings, truffle, wet wood, used leather sole, matured meat and black hibiscus tea.

On the tongue, the wine is medium-bodied and well balanced with silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Ripe cherry, warm prunes, dehydrated mushrooms, black tea with red berries, bresaola, juniper berry and iodine in the finish.

1990 Château Léoville Las Cases - Saint-Julien (98 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is from the Saint-Julien appellation in Bordeaux, France. Château Léoville Las Cases is 1 of 15 Second Growths in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. This wine is a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot. 1990 was an excellent vintage in Bordeaux with a very hot summer and perfect weather through to harvest.

👁 Deep ruby color with a medium rim and a slight garnet hue.

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, black plum, sweet tobacco, leather, dried log, cedar, dried leaves, lead pencil, gravel, wood charcoal, and wilted rose.

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium ripe tannins, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), and full body. The fruit profile on the palate is still fresh fruit and has not turned into dried fruit flavors yet. A long length finish of concentrated black fruit, sweet tobacco, lead pencil, and dried leaves.

🔔 Château Léoville Las Cases always seems to age slowly, and this bottle at 30 years is amazingly youthful. There is some development on the nose, but the freshness of the fruit is still there in spades. The fruit is so concentrated on the palate that it reminds me of crème de cassis. There is a lot of weight to this wine due to the heat of the vintage, but the ABV is barely noticeable. If you own this, I recommend additional cellaring or at least decanting for 3-4 hours. In the 1990 vintage, LLC is on par or, in many cases, better than the First Growths. Yes, LLC is one of the most expensive "Super Seconds," but there is a reason for that price tag. I always make sure to buy LLC in a top vintage as I know my future grandchildren will thank me for it.

2016 Domaine Font du Vent - Cuvée Élégance de Jeanne Châteauneuf-du-Pape (93 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the Southern Rhône of France. The wine is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% field blend. The Grenache vines are 100 to 120 years old. The vines are from the famous lieu-dit of La Crau, which has soils made of clay and galets. All of the farming is certified organic, and grapes are hand-harvested. 50% to 100% of the stems are removed, depending on the vintage. The fermentation takes place with native yeasts, and the wine has 30 days of skin maceration. The wine is aged in demi-muids (600 L) barrels and concrete tanks. This Cuvée is only made in exceptional vintages.

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe raspberry, boysenberry, black cherry, blueberry preserves, licorice, lavender, rose, white pepper, bergamot, and beets.

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium+ spicy tannins, high alcohol (15%), and full body. It is very layered with a great texture. A long length finish of ripe and preserved black fruits with a earthy and spicy components lingering to the end.

🔔 This Cuvée is another stunning wine from Famille Gonnet. The charm and power of La Crau are highlighted with this wine. I love the darker fruit profile combined with the mix of florals and spice. The spicy and earthy notes dominate on the palate at the moment, but there is plenty of fruit concentration to go the distance. I enjoyed it after giving it the right amount of air. My recommendation is to enjoy it in another 5-7 years. I would like to try this Cuvée and the previous one side by side in the same vintage.

As of 2019, Viña Don Melchor was set up as a standalone winery from Concha y Toro to enable the Don Melchor team to communicate their brand better. 2015 Domaine Xavier et Agnès Amirault - Les Gravilices St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil (90 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Cabernet Franc from the St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil appellation in the Loire Valley of France. The vineyards are certified Organic and Biodynamic. The soil is deep gravel. The grapes are hand-harvested, then macerate in a tank for 5-6 weeks. The wine is aged for 9 months in foudre (large wood vats).

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe sour cherry, red currant, raspberry, sweet tobacco, rose stem, mint tea, and wet rock.

👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, medium powdery tannins, medium alcohol (12.5%), and medium body. A medium length finish of ripe crunchy red fruit, sweet tobacco, and mint tea.

🔔 Les Gravilices is filled with ripe tart red fruit and seductive herbal notes. There is a noticeable higher tension in the wine that reflects as higher acidity. There is a "mineral" sensation that I can best describe, like licking a piece of slate on your tongue. Overall, very high toned and perfumed. Sweet tobacco (pipe tobacco) is such a fantastic aroma, and this wine has it in spades. Charming wine!

2015 Domaine Font du Vent - Cuvée Etienne Gonnet Châteauneuf-du-Pape (94 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the Southern Rhône of France. The wine is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 15% Mourvèdre. The Grenache vines are 100 to 120 years old, while the Syrah and Mourvèdre are 90 years old. The vines are from the famous lieu-dit of La Crau, which has soils made of clay and galets. All of the farming is certified organic, and grapes are hand-harvested. 50% to 100% of the stems are removed, depending on the vintage. The fermentation takes place with native yeasts, and the wine has 30 days of skin maceration. The Grenache is aged in concrete and wooden vats, with the Syrah and Mourvèdre demi-muids (600 L) barrels. This Cuvée is only made in exceptional vintages.

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe raspberry, stewed cherries, strawberry preserves, rhubarb, prosciutto, dried leaves, white pepper, cinnamon, rosemary, elderflower, and violets.

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium spicy tannins, high alcohol (14.5%), and medium+ body. A long length finish of ripe and stewed red fruit with layers of florals, herbs, and spices.

🔔 This cuvée is stunning. While it is incredibly young, it can be enjoyed now with a good decant. La Crau is famous for a reason, and Guillaume Gonnet has a deft hand keeping this is extraordinarily fresh and elegant in a reasonably hot vintage. This wine will continue to improve in the bottle and should be outstanding in another five years. I am amazed that I didn't know about this Producer earlier, and I look forward to trying more of in the coming vintages.

 2015 Domaine Font du Vent - Cuvée Etienne Gonnet

2017 Domaine Font du Vent - Cuvée Tradition Châteauneuf-du-Pape (90 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the Southern Rhône of France. The wine is a blend of 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and 10% field blend. The vines are an average age of 70 years old with southern exposure on soils of clay and galets. All of the farming is certified organic, and grapes are hand-harvested. 60% to 100% of the stems are removed, depending on the vintage. Vinification takes place in a combination of concrete vats, stainless steel tanks, and wood vats. The wine does not spend time in new oak.

👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe raspberry, blueberry, sweet cherry, white pepper, black licorice, and Herbes de Provence.

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium ripe tannins, high alcohol (14.5%), and medium+ body. A medium length finish of ripe red and blue fruit with licorice and spice.

🔔 This wine is a perfect starting point for understanding the elegant side of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This wine has ripe red and blue fruits, followed by peppery spice and those famous "garrigue" flavors of the Mediterranean coast. Nothing about this wine is jammy, high octane, or smothered in new oak. Guillaume Gonnet is doing a fantastic job, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Wait until you try his "old vine" Cuvées.

2002 Domaine Fourrier - Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cherbaudes Vieille Vignes (93 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Pinot Noir from the Premier Cru Les Cherbaudes in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. The vines were planted in 1940 on a parcel that is just below the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, with spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for 18-20 months in French oak barrels with around 20% new oak. The wines are bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfur.

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe sour cherry, red currant, smoke, dried leaves, peppery spice, earthy, wet rock, and a slight herbal note (aloe).

👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium- soft tannins, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), and medium body. More mineral notes of wet rock and charcoal on the palate. A medium+ length finish of ripe and tart sour cherries, wet stone, and aloe.

🔔 It is always fun to try a wine with a bit more age from a highly regarded Producer like Domaine Fourrier. I have always found that Les Cherbaudes was quite open and soft compared with many of the other cuvées. 2002 was a great vintage, but Fourrier hit their stride a few vintages after this one. Very enjoyable and definitely in the right drinking window. I found the slight cooling aloe vera flavor quite exciting and not often encountered. A decent amount of spice as well. Everything on this wine was in the right place, and it just shows you that sometimes less is more.

2016 Anne et Jean-François Ganevat - Le P’tiot Roukin Vin de France Rouge (90 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is a Vin de France, and the Cuvée changes significantly based on the year. Some years it a multi-regional blend of grapes from Gamay, Syrah, or ancient indigenous varieties preserved by his father but banned in the appellation guidelines. 2016 is a blend of Pinot Noir, Poulsard, and Trousseau from a 70-year old vineyard planted on marl and limestone. Biodynamically, hand-harvested, and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Semi-carbonic maceration for 10 months in a conical wood tank. This wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without the addition of Sulfur.

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe red cherry, cranberry, red currant, bay leaf, and earthy.

👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, low soft tannins, medium alcohol (12.5%), and medium- body. A medium+ length finish of crunchy red fruit and bay leaf that is surprisingly long.

🔔 This wine is an avant-garde example of what VdF and natural wine could and should taste like in the right hands. The color is hypnotizing. In the glass, this is not flashy, but pure crunchy red fruit that lingers on the palate with a slight herbal and earthiness for added complexity. There is a "low sulfur" aroma that comes across like beer foam on the nose but blows off with air. It definitely feels like a glou glou wine to me. A joy to drink, but don't overthink it.

Roberto established the winery in 1986, and today he rules over parcels on some of the best and most prestigious vineyards of La Morra.

He is an exceptional farmer and winemaker and his methods in the vines are extremely careful: He fertilize each plant (not the whole vineyard and no chemicals), and he thins out the vines at least twice before harvest - in July to make sure only 5 clusters are on each plant, and in August where he almost cuts away 30% of each cluster.

In the cellar, Roberto is considered somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist due to his mix of small and big barrels (some new, some old), but still with a long maceration.

• Hand-harvested from the vineyards of Vigneti S. Francesco and Fontanazza in La Morra

• Spontaneous fermentation in steel tanks

• Aged 12 months in tonneaux and barrels of 25 hl each (30% new) followed by 8 months in steel tanks

Very expressive on the nose right from the start. For a Langhe, it’s very dark offering dark cherry, blackberry, strawberry wine gum, chocolate, Bassett’s brown liquorice, cloves, rose petals and violets, fresh asphalt and watermelon rind.

The palate is medium-bodied, a bit fat in structure, with fine small tannins and medium acidity. Elderberry, fresh dark cherry, sweet blueberry, black liquorice, coconut, black truffle, vanilla. Long finish with a graphite-like minerality.

Greater depth than most Langhe Nebbiolos!

The Pira family has been tending to their 12 hectares of vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, the eastern part of Barolo, since the 1950s

Vines are 30+ years in age, in a 2 hectare, organically farmed vineyard with northwestern exposure, limestone and clay soils, at 330 meters in elevation. Aged in stainless steel 8-9 months.

Plush layers of blackberry, red current, plum, rhubarb, herbs glide atop fine grain tannins.

Dark chocolate and pomegranate infuse the distinctive bitter finish.

Wife and husband team Julie and Toby Bainbridge focus on crafting fresh, bright wines in Anjou.

Their 4 hectares of old vines are farmed organically, biodynamically and with minimal intervention.

Vines are 85 years in age in black schist soils. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and carbonic maceration in stainless steel. Bottled with “a bit of leftover CO2 to further protect the wine”, unfined and unfiltered.

Transparent red-violet in colour, with aromas of black cherry, garrique, peppermint, summer woods.

Raspberry, black cherry, pomegranate, black pepper, grilled herbs, fresh acidity meld with black tea tannins.

Cranberry and strawberry infuse the spicy finish.
