To all Nebbiolo fans out there, keep your eyes peeled for this! Here’s a stunning example of an Aussie Nebbiolo by Virago in Beechworth that’s well worth tracking down. It’s the result of five different Nebbiolo clones grown by Karen and Prue, the Vignerons, and a little helping hand from none other than Rick Kinzbrunner. What a riddiculously good set-up!!

On the nose the 2015 shows beautifully lifted florals, cherries, anise, and undergrowth in what can only be described as a heavenly perfume. It steps up a gear on the palate as the dark cherry flavours and bright acidty intermingle with darker fruits and rustic, earthy, leathery notes. It’s  perhaps the best Aussie Neb I’ve had!!

Sipping a surprisingly good Sangiovese from Mt Wines in Heathcote. It’s fresh, slightly racy, with red berries, plums and good dose of savoury pepper, cloves and anise all tightly woven together. Very nicely balanced, medium bodied/ weighted on the palate. A super easy wine to drink and perfect for a midweek tipple. I’d drink it again, and again!

 range is a smooth, lush, luxurious beast of a Barossa Shiraz. First off, the fruit. Deep, concentrated and endless with a good dose of oak. It’s about as lavish and opulent as you’d expect. Waves of velvety concentrated fruit, Xmas cake and marzipan sweetness on the palate. Grippy tannins, nothing forceful just pure simple power, depth, and length. If you like your Barossa reds dialled up to 11, then look no further. Pleasure guaranteed! -

Dom. Francois Raveneau, arguably the most celebrated estate of Chablis, was establish in 1948. After WWII, the economy in Chablis was in bad condition and the region was hit by phylloxera, so many wineries sold off parcels. Francois saw the potential and secured himself af few parcels here and the on some of the best 1er and Grand Crus in Chablis (approx. 9he in total)

The exceptional Raveneaus are a combination of the greatest holdings, low yield and quality consistency.

Francois passed away in 1995, and today, François’ sons, Bernard and Jean-Marie, direct the domaine with their father’s philosophy in both the vineyards and the cellar.

* The pressed juice is left to settle, and then racked off its lees into cuve to ferment.

* Elevation: 18 months in older oak barrel and feuillette (a local barrel size holding 114-132 liters)

Extremely clean expression of Chardonnay!

Expressive aromas of ripe pear, yellow apple, dandelion, mild soured cream, lemon curd, freshly cut Meyer lemon, white flowers, flint, seashell and a slightly waxy touch.

The palate is medium-bodied with great acidity. Crispy and milky at the same time. Peach, baked apple, lemon zest and juice, almond and “unsalted parmesan”. Long finish with huge minerality - salt and chalky.

A 1951 Penfolds Bin 1 Grange wine has sold for a record price at @ auction. It went to a Melbourne buyer for more than $103,000 – the highest price ever for a bottle of Australian wine. This wine broke the previous record of $81,000, which was set in December 2019.

So that roughly works out about $17k per glass. But don’t drink it just yet - if you bought this bottle in December last year the value would have gained a 27% increase in 7 months.

Langtons have a bit of Grange history on their website and outlined the 1952 vintage, regarded as the first commercial release, was probably sold at around 15 shillings ($1.50)

This is one of my bucket list wines and it did not fail. Exceptional.

I normally don’t rate wines from the cellar but this would be an A+. From the instant you taste this,

Barry White starts singing in his deep sultry voice - and then you realise your Bluetooth isn’t even connected!

The wine itself is a Bordeaux blend with an Australian underline. I actually have a laugh as if this was made in France the name would be something like called Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Château deYarra LaYarring Côte vin sec Bordeaux 2012.

But it’s Australian, so it’s just called Dry Red Wine No.1.

“What do we call this Darryl?” “It’s our first wine, Dale. Call it number one”.

No disrespect intended. One of the simplest labels on one of Australia’s best wines. I love this. This is an amazing wine that I’ve wanted to try for years. The problem is now I’ll have to buy some more 😂

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru “Les Amoureses”, 2016

📍Chambolle-Musigny, Bourgogne, France🇫🇷

This small but high quality domaine has holdings in the top vineyards in Chambolle such as the Grand Cru “Bonnes-Mares”, 1er Cru “Les Amoureuses” and “Les Charmes”, with vines that are around 45 years old. Bertheau has been in the business since 1984, and took over the management of the winery in 2004 carrying the philosophy of as much hand-off winemaking as possible. The domaine is certified as biodynamic with no intervention in the cellar - only indigonous yeasts, little remontage and pigeage and mainly use of 2-3 year old barrels to let the wine express itself as pure and typical for the terroir as possible.

“Les Amoureses” might be the most hailed 1er Cru vineyard in Bourgogne. There’s a general agreement in the fact, that it outshines some of the Grand Crus (and should be counted as one).

What a sensual and beautiful young wine! The bouquet needs some time to show off, but wow, the fruit and floral scents were magnificent, pure and intense with notes of blueberry, amarena cherry, violet and rose petals (with a green touch of stem), chocolate, hibiscus, warm baking spices and mild toasted oak.

The palate is soft and bold with a refined, balancing acidity.  The taste is very youthful offering fresh raspberry, cranberry juice, candied orange peel, black tea, white pepper and a dark touch of sweet cranberry sauce - a fine, medium long mineral finish.

It might sound like any other good Pinot Noir from the tasting notes, but this one is extremely well made with great elegance, power and structure. What a wine!

 ⭐️93/100⭐️ Domaine Francois Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny 1er

🍇 Corvina / Rondinalle / Corvinone / Oseleta

The winery was founded in the early 1980’s by Graziano Prà and his brothers, Sergio and Flavio, who are all deeply related to generations of winemaking.

The winemaking approach is shaped by sustainability and a naturally healthy philosophy to nature and the environment. They are organically certified, but only use of natural methods during harvest and vinification are allowed.

The winery is located in the village of Monteforte d’Alpone in the Soave-area in the region of Veneto. It’s the whites from Soave, that created Prà’s international reputation in the beginning, but it’s definitely worth having a look at their reds in Valpolicella as well.

The Morandina is made from grapes harvested at 450 metres altitude.

Light drying of the grapes for 20 days, vinified (destemmed) with délestage-method (less extraction of tannins) and aged 3-6 months in 20 hl oak casks. Only around 5.000 bottles are made pr. year.

Well, this is by far the most interesting and elegant Valpolicella I’ve ever had..!

The wine is bright ruby with purple edges - and almost fully transparent. The nose is extremely aromatic with an almost overwhelming scent of fresh and baked red bell pepper and tomato (like entering a warm greenhouse) with lots of florality and herbs: Basil, thyme, mint, anise and lavender and rose petals. It’s complimented by fresh blackcurrant, rhubarb and a great chalky minerality.

The palate is quite light and very harmonious and fresh.

Light red fruit (fresh blackcurrant and sour cherry-like), smooth tannins, crushed black pepper, rooibos tea, raspberry soda and a superb mineral finish.

 ⭐️88/100⭐️ Graziano Prà Valpolicella “Morandina”, 2018

Domaine Rolet, founded in 1942, is a flagship winery from Jura and one of the largest and best reputed estates in the area. Today, it’s owned by three families (the Devillard, Flambert and Dupuis families) who want to combine the traditional (oxidized voile-vinification) and the modern (more classic fully topped barrel/tank vinification) Jura philosophy. Their wines also differs in style in order of classic, organic production and natural production.

They cover a wide range of classic Jura grape varieties, producing red, white, sparkling wines and Vin Jaune, a regional specialty (see earlier post), from 160 acres of vines in Arbois and Côtes de Jura.

l’Etoile is a small commune in Jura, from where the grapes for this wine are organically harvested.

The Chardonnay is vinified without oxidation to save some freshness, while the Savagnin is aged under voile (flor) to bring a super oxidative style. It’s aged 12 and 16 months in small old barrels before blending.

Beautiful first impression with the clear, golden amber/oxidized color. It’s got super expressive aromas of oxidation like brown windfallen apples, roasted nuts, burnt caramel, wet wood, fresh light honey, and orange peel. There’s a nice freshness to balance the oxidized aromas - a little weissbier-like with fresh hay, orange juice and elderflower. Then followed by a slight scent of top soil and white smoke. The palate is super dry yet smooth with a bit of bitternes matched by a medium acidity. Once again, windfallen yellow fruits are the base of the wine (dry Sherry-like), complimented by lemon peel, walnuts, cigar, burnt caramel, gingerbread, cinnamon and digestive biscuit. The minerality is pure and mouthwatering bringing some extra freshness to the wine. The finish is long with a salted touch.

 ⭐️90/100⭐️ Domaine Rolet Expression l’Etoile, 2013 📍Arbois

Margaux Grand Cru Classé (2nd growth), 1989

🍇55% Cabernet Sauvignon / 40% Merlot / 5% Petit Verdot

Cht. Lascombes, founded in 1625, is one of the largest 1855-classified estates on the Médoc with approximately 120 hectares of vineyards on some of the most coveted plots in the area with the unique Margaux-terroir.

The vineyards are located in three different areas of roughly the same surface area: a gravelly hill planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, a block of clay and gravel made up of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and finally clay/limestone plots, where the Merlot finds its optimal expression. Interestingly, Merlot is the predominant variety in the vineyard’s grape composition, making up 50% of the total, which is quite a unique feature in the Margaux appellation.

All work in the vineyard is performed by hand, and huge investments in the cellar have brought the quality of Lascombes’ wines even closer to the top of Bordeaux.

Aging in French oak barrels for 18 to 20 months on the lees to gain more body and complexity.

This perfectly conditioned bottle from the outstanding vintage of 1989 showed so much personality. It’s definitely one of my best old-wine-experiences so far with great depth and youthful freshness.

The bouquet opened up slowly offering a complex nose of blackcurrant, figs, cedar, dried violet, forrest floor, rust, sweet tobacco, truffle, leather, bayleaves, brown olives and gravel.

The palate was super smooth and characterized by wild strawberry, mocca, vanilla, burnt caramel, truffle, pepper and raw liquorice.

Allover a super elegant expression of old Margaux with charm, femininity, silky soft tannins and a long, delicious finish.

 ⭐️94/100⭐️ Château Lascombes Margaux Grand Cru Classé (2nd

Erdener Bußlay is the third vineyard connected to the village of Erden in the central part of Mosel.

Located on the same side of the Mosel River ad Erden, it’s facing the more famous Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Prälat.

Compared to Treppchen, Bußlay often deliver more fullbodied and less elegant Rieslings. Yet, they are very long living and have huge aging potential offering more structured and heavy wines.

Perfect color for a vintage white👌🏼

The nose is heavy and complex with exotic fruits like mango, canned pineapple, honeydew melon and peach. Flowers, beeswax and tertiary notes of old eraser and a touch of gasoline bring a classic vintage-Mosel style to the aroma.

The palate is round and soft (not much acidity left) with great depth. Fresh mango, papya, candied yellow/white fruits, ginger and honeycomb in a lovely relationship - and an endless finish of lemoncurd.

This winery keeps delivering high class with their matured vintages.

Margaux Grand Cru Classé (3rd growth), 1982

📍Cantenac, Margaux, Bordeaux, France🇫🇷

🍇Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot / Cabernet Franc / Petit Verdot

Winemaking at Château Kirwan dates back to 1710, when the famous negociant, Sir John Collingwood, bought the estate. His daughter married Mark Kirwan, who was in charge of the property at that time - he increased the quality in the vineyards and created the cháteau as it’s known today. Two centuries later, after changing ownership a couple of times, the property was sold to Schröder & Schÿler in 1925, another great negociant firm, who continue owning and managing the château until this day.

The wine appeared with a beautiful dark ruby color with no signs of too much oxidation. The bouquet needed a bit more than two hours of decanting to really show the potential behind well matured Margaux-wine. To me, Château Kirwan is often very feminine in style, offering classic Margaux characteristics in a very gentle and light way. A backbone of blackcurrant and dark cherry embraced by dark chocolate, vanilla, raisins and dried flowers. Deliacate spices such as truffle, mint and tobacco meet notes of leather and cedar to complete this Bordeaux’ aroma experience. The palate is soft and medium-bodied with creamy tannins and a still vibrant acidity. Cherry compote and plums with dark, dry chocolate, light smoke and some earthiness in the finish. It’s a textbook (but very well written) Margaux, and it did extremely well with 38 years age.

 ⭐️92/100⭐️ Château Kirwan Margaux Grand Cru Classé (3rd

📍Santa Rita Hills, Santa Barbara, California, USA🇺🇸

The project began in 1999 when Danish Peter and Rebecca Work purchased 82 acres of land in what would later become the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, and named it “Ampelos” -  the Greek word for vine.

But it was first after a cancelled meeting at the World Trade Center on the morning of September 9/11, that the couple was brought to the realization that it was time to pursue their dreams of growing grapes as a full-time lifestyle. They quit their jobs and moved permanently to their fledgling vineyards in the southern Sta. Rita Hills AVA.

The vineyards are all cultivated with respect for nature and the environment and were some of the first US vineyards to be certified “Sustainability in Practice”, Organic and Biodynamic. As well in the cellar, only use of sustainable (biodynamic and organic) and natural winemaking methods are used - and no artificial additives.

. The use of oak is meant to be a balanced part of the flavor profile rather than a scene-stealer. The wine ages for 21 months in barrique (French and American - 35% new). The wine is unfined and unfiltered.

The wine has got a lovely, deep yet fresh, dusty and herbal bouquet. Blackcurrant, blackberry, tobacco, dark choko, sweet liquorice, basil, rosemary and some well integrated wood.

The palete is formed by a rich body, low acidity and powdery tannins - it’s a superb structure! Dark berry compote, dark choko, espresso, vanilla - yum!

 ⭐️87/100⭐️ Ampelos Cellars Syrache “Sigma: The Sum”, 2013

Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé (3rd growth), 1989

📍Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France🇫🇷

🍇53% Cabernet Sauvignon / 38% Merlot / 7% Cabernet Franc / 2% Petit Verdot

Located just north-east from the village of Saint-Estèphe, Château Calong-Ségur is the most northern Grand Cru classé-winery on the Medoc. Historic records from 1147 show the existence of the property, which makes the Château a contender for the oldest property of Saint-Estèphe. After passing through generations, the estate became the property of the famous Marquis de Ségur (1695-1755), who is an important figure in Bordeaux’s history. His ownership of numerous top Bordeaux estates of the day (including Lafite, Mouton and Latour), made him have a big impact on the image of some of today’s most well-known wineries. During his life time, he was known as The Prince of Vines.

According to legend, de Ségur is quoted as saying “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.” That famous saying lives forever on the label of Chateau Calon Ségur, where the drawing of a heart is prominently featured on the logo.

Unfortunately, the bottle hasn’t been stored correct, which had a big impact on the experience. I’d say it was a B-condition containing wine to the mid shoulder. The cork was soaked all way through and moldy on the outer surface.

The color is very oxidized and a bit cloudy, showing a rusty core.

The bouquet started bad. Moldy, humid basement and wet cardboard. After just a few minutes, most of these harsh aromas disappeared, revealing i tiny bit of what we hoped for. Without impressing. Tomato stem, mushrooms, pencil case, saffron, stable, too old coffee grounds and raw liquorice. But still with unpleasant hints of wet paper.

The palate was medium-bodied with not much acidity left. A bit of cranberry, cedar, bitter tomato and light raisins were offered. Not much else.Not a bad experience, but not worth the name.

 ⭐️83/100⭐️ Château Calon-Ségur Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé

📍Calce, Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon, France🇫🇷

—————— This masterpiece of an orange wine from Tom Lubbe (aka. Mr. Matassa) made from the super aromatic Muscat de Alexandria variety was the first wine pairing from our visit at Noma a few days ago. Paired with fresh, raw flowers and greens followed by an oyster serving, candied beets and “The Butterfly”.  It was just excellent!

The vines are all organic, and the following vinification all natural with indigenous yeasts and no fining and filtration.

The must macerates for 35 days followed by maturation in old barrels.

Super expressive and aromatic nose on this deep amber colored juice. The quite typical orange wine scents of kombucha, orange peel, fermented apple and apricot are very expressive in this wine, but the perfect compliments from notes of dried peach, fresh elderflower, beeswax, freshly cut grass, dill and flower power makes it further complex and exciting. The palate has these powdery tannins as you’d find in black tea steeped too long. Together with the quite rich body and the acidity, the whole texture is superbly balanced.

Dried mango, tangerine, fresh stone fruit and lemon peel with a herbal touch, a bit of acacia and a long and super mineral finish. Once again, Tom Lubbe delivers one of the best and most elegant orange wines on the market.

 ⭐️93/100⭐️ Matassa Cuvée Alexandria, 2019 📍Calce, Côtes

📍Alt Penedés, Catalonia, Spain🇪🇸

—————— The estate of Can Suriol was founded in 1985 after centuries of winemaking in the family. Located in Alt Penedés, it’s a perfect spot to produce top quality Cava with the 250-350 meters altitude and a terroir consisting of heavy limestone and clay-calcarious soils. And especially the Cava might be the wineries most well known wines. The sweet spot for Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada has led to a tradition of making vintage Cava, which is quite rare. Suriol also produce some still whites and reds, and from this vintage orange wine is on the menu too. They work naturally in the vineyards such as in the cellars, meaning no added commercial yeast or enzymes, no filtration or clarifying and only a little addition of sulfur. Their vineyards have always been organically cultivated since the 15th century, with certification arriving in 1998.

The nose is performing from the beginning offering a heavy yet fresh perfumed scent like sticking your head into a bush of flowers. Add some green tea, herbal soap and sichuan pepper. It’s quite fruit driven too with ripe tangerine, mango and papaya.

The palate is light with a mild acidity and soft structure. It’s like a vinous tangerine lemonade. The complexity belongs to the aromas in the nose, and it’s quite simple on the tongue. But super delicious and worth a try (more than once).

 ⭐️85/100⭐️ Can Suriol Can Peritxó Macerato, 2018 📍Alt

The three Pinot Noir passioned winemakers, Anthony, Webster and David, came across each other while working for legendary Williams Selyem in the early 00’s before starting their own project in 2004, Anthill Farms. They are the real deal Burgundy negociants, buying all grapes carefully selected from vineyards all over Sonoma. They focus on Pinot Noir producing some single vineyard wines and a few appellation wines. Some years, they also work with a bit of Syrah and Chardonnay. . Talking Pinot Noir, they focus on the pure expression of the grape - in general meaning less new oak. So far, the maximum use of new oak in their PNs has been 40%, and they are more than happy to use whole cluster fermentation (often around 30%) before aging in the barrels for 10-12 months. Their “Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir” is blended from small parcels on the first and second ridge from The Pacific Ocean, where the maritime winds are slowing down the ripening process and allow the grapes to maintain a superb acidic balance.  The wine is unfined and unfiltered. .

The bouquet is on fire from the very beginning, generously offering wild strawberry, candied cherry, pomegranate, cola, mild cloves, hibiscus tea, mild mushrooms and forrest floor with a mineral touch of lead.

The palate is soft and round and balanced by a vibrant acidity. Candied/dried strawberry, cranberry juice and fresh blueberry forms the primary flavor profile. Pepper, green herbs and ripe rhubarb are complimenting and giving some depth to the wine.

 ⭐️86/100⭐️ Anthill Farms Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, 2014

📍Kamptal, Niederösterreich, Austria🇦🇹

Matthias Warnung farms approximately 10 hectares of vines in the region of Kamptal in Austria - northwest from Vienna.  His vineyards consists of mainly old and well adapted vines of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Zweigelt, but he also hides a bit of some Chardonnay and Muller-Thurgau in his pockets. He took over the operation of the winery from his father in 2010, after spending time working with various other winemakers, most notably the famed South African natural winemaker behind Testalonga, Craig Hawkins. He’s focusing on natural harvesting, and ferments all the wines spontaneously with little to no sulfur added.

This wine is made from 15 to 30 years old vines from three younger vineyards.

Fermentation with whole bunches with semi carbonic fermentation in 60 years old 3500-liter barrels with two weeks of maceration. It’s

pressed off the skins into fiberglass tanks for two years of elevage on the lees before bottling unfined and unfiltered.  4.700 bottles were made.

Super interesting bouquet with a backbone of fresh raspberry and strawberry followed by green herbs, liquorice, tar, horse stable, wet slate, pepper and fresh moss. A perfumed scent of rose petals and lavender ends the nose with a lovely hint of yeast.

The palate is light and it’s got a nice prickling acidity with fresh red berries, rhubarb, herbs and pepper.

—————— One of my favorite Barbaresco producers. I was lucky enough to visit the winery back in 2018 with some fellow wine friends, having a lovely vineyard walk and a mouth-watering tasting. If you get the chance, drop by for a visit!

The small family-run winery, located in the beautiful surroundings of the village of Neive, produces wine with love and care (also about to get their organic certification - if they haven’t already got it..?). They proudly produce around 40K bottles a year from their 10 hectares.  Neive is home to some of the most powerful and structured wines of Barbaresco - this wine lives 100 percent up to the image. Already from the beginning, powerful aromas cover your nostrils hitting the brain immediately after - giving you what you expect. And what you want from a top Barbaresco... Well, give it some time in the decanter anyways… The nose brings harmonious balance between fruit and tertiary notes -  raspberry, pomegranate, dusty claypot, dried rose petals, tar, leather, chanterelles and cloves. The palate is medium-bodied with sour cherry, almond, orange peel, raisins, cedar and a clear mineral tone. It’s still quite tannic, and has a some more years of excellence. The finish is medium long with a fine balsamic touch.

Finally, don’t forget to look at that pomegranate color. —

—————— The relatively young, organically focused winery (established in 2007 - first released vintage in 2011) is located in the heart of La Morra and rules over 10,5 hectares of vineyards, which of course result in a very limited production. Their wines have been praised and well reviewed from the very first vintage, showing a super delicate style. The elegance of their Barolos tell why La Morra and Chambolle-Musigny are often compared by their terroir...

Trediberri is a collaboration between Frederico Oberto (former winemaker of Renato Ratti), his son Nicola and the banker and wine enthusiast Vladimiro Rambaldi. “Tre” means “the three” and Berri refers to the small village where the winery is located. No matter if were talking about their Barolos, Dolcetto, Barbera, Sauvignon Blanc or their other Nebbiolos, they’re aiming for the light, soft and feminine style - still with lots of complexity and terroir focus.  The wines are ready to be drunk in the younger stage, but all the reds show high aging potential. Trediberri’s story has just started, and the first few chapters are well written and catchy. Seriously looking forward to try their Barolos with more age.

Classic Barolo color were the edges are already beginning to go from clear to terra cotta orange.

It took only a few minutes for the bouquet to open up. Delicate aromas of fresh cherry, raspberry and pomegrante were backed up by notes of fresh leather, light tar, truffle, sage and super clear anise.

The palate is in the lighter end with great acidity and small grainy tannins.

A base of cherry, blueberry and blackberry, followed by light toast, cinnamon, pepper, dried herbs and sweet tobacco.

The finish is medium+ with a fine balsamic touch.
