 has to be one of the premier Pinot vineyards in Australia. With the top of the range retailing for about $800, this one is far more budget friendly. At mid $40, it is their entry level but does it live up to the brand or is it just a means to sell 1000’s of bottles?

The 17k is named after the vineyard (which has 17000 vines). I’ve seen it has had mixed reviews but I loved it. Strong, powerful and an interesting profile. This is not an entry level pinot or some quick grab to sell some bottles. It is a very good pinot for the price. The problem is that this $40 bottle will end up costing me a lot more, as I’ll have to try the reserve and premium one now…simple…

Needs a decanter and time to open up for the full experience.

I don’t usually post or review wines from outside Australia, mainly as I don’t know enough or actually drank enough foreign wine. Not that I don’t like it, quite the opposite.

We all know lockdown means online shopping. I saw this unusual bottle, different label and had no idea about it. Done, I had to buy it. Impulse shopping at its best.

First impression was that cork. It made me smile. A little Easter egg find.

There wasnt much information on the label other than it said it was a product of Austria. First mistake, I thought it may have been German. As I scanned the label -  knowing that I can’t read German, the only thing I can possibly make out is the wine term is GmbH. Maybe this is a Grenache Merlot blend?? Wrong again. GmbH is actually a German abbreviation of the German phrase “Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung,” which means "company with limited liability” 🤔

Anyway that’s enough homeschooling for the night. Back to the wine.

It doesn’t disappoint at all. The wine is the same as the label, unique, unusual and different but all in a good way….simple…

I wanted to see how this was developing in the cellar. Although still very young, I loved this wine when first released and I couldn’t resist opening another one.

The development is slow. Let's start with it is still a beautiful wine and everything I remember. Initial thoughts 🤔  I better buy some more.

High alcohol content hasn’t disappeared. No real changed from the notes I made originally (and that’s not a bad thing)

Recommendation: This will take further time to develop and fingers crossed, I think I will leave it another 5 years before I open another.

The back of the label outlines 10 years but I’m thinking that will be a minimum. I’m thinking more like 15 to reach that peak drinking window. But I love drinking this now and the hardest thing will be letting this wine last that long. Maybe I better buy some more…simple…

This why I cellar wines. I originally bought 6 of these back in the day and been lucky enough to enjoy these over a decade. But it has now really hit a peak. Full, dark with a taste that I can only describe as sitting in a smooth vintage leather chair, open fire in one corner and a view to a mean but breathtakingly beautiful storm over the ocean.

Amazing development over the years. Nothing is out of place. Just loving

Cellaring wines does not have to be expensive.

Some of my best aged wines are affordable wines. This is a 2002 Peter Lehmann Cabernet Sauvignon from his portrait series. I think at the time they were about $12 and even today on special, you can get current vintage for $16. Bargain and a beautiful wine to drink especially with a few years under its belt. Every year it gets thicker and tastier. I think I had two dozen of these and over 16 years of drinking they have never disappointed. What Peter Lehmann does with a $16 bottle is ridiculous. I think I have 3 left.

This is one example many wines I cellar that are very affordable.

Not your average Hunter Valley Shiraz. Definitely a lighter version and is unquestionably drinkable. The winemaker gives the recommendation of “drink slightly chilled with a straw”. I can’t argue with that...simple...

 in New York City. The team at Rogers Marvel were the designers of this one of kind wine store. They were originally inspired by the parallel rows and rolling contours of a hilly vineyard. Absolutely beautiful.
