‘Si Rose’ was inspired by Roman winemaking in which white wine was made with macerated grapes, along with the increasing temperature in Alsace, causing difficulties with slow ripening varieties.

Grapes are from are from 2 consecutive vintages, from south facing hillside vineyards with limestone soils.

20% macerated for 8 months, 80% macerated for 8 days, bottled in autumn 2020. Unfined, unfiltered, no added So2.

Bright coral-orange in colour, very aromatic; with mango, rose water, melon, grapefruit, nutmeg, orange. Delicate Bergamot black tea tannins and tingly acidity accent layers of blood orange, strawberry, peach, grapefruit, mango, nectarine, lavender, candied ginger.

Thyme, orange and citrus zest infuse the crisp, mineral finish.

Tuesday night tidy up time and I just found this. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou’s second wine, one of my favourite producers in St Julien, La Croix de Beaucaillou (52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot). I bought it at the Chateau 3 years ago and figured it’d would be worth a punt given the quality of the 2015 vintage and the vineyard sites. At 5 years old it’s still a baby so I think I’ll dig it out in another 5.

Chateau Gruard Larose in pure Bordeaux sunshine goodness. If you're planning a trip to Bordeaux I can highly recommend stopping here for a tour of the place. An absolutely fantastic experience walking the grounds, vineyards, wine tanks and finally the grand barrel hall.... What a barrel hall!! All wrapped up with a tasting of the Gruard Larose wines. Awesome!⁣

Almost forgot to mention the 9m observation tower which is an architectural masterpiece. Do not miss this one!⁣

It's not everyday I add a Burgundy to the collection but today is one of those days and Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Caillerets Clos 60 Ouvrees Volnay Premier Cru 2015 is that wine. I must confess, my knowledge of Burgundy is somewhat limited but I'm familiar with this producer and Volnay. As for a drinking window, I’ve no idea... tips please?!⁠

About Volnay.... Volnay is an appellation in the Côte de Beaune between Meursault on the south side and Pommard on the north side.  The wines are distinctly different from those of Pommard, lighter in colour and more elegant.  They have always been known as delicate, fruity feminine and very fine wines, even a century ago the wines were described as "partridge-eye" pink in colour and the finest of all the wines of the Côte de Beaune.  Whilst often displaying great charm and fruit in their youth the best Volnay often have considerable power too and can be very age worthy.⁠

Not a bad drop for a Friday! 2014 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru. Attractive nose, takes time to fully show itself but once open it delivers mineralité and lifted black and red fruit. Crisp on the palate with fine tannin, supported by black fruits and a stony characteristic on the finish. ⁣⠀

I think it needs a few more years of bottle age for my taste, but it's quality without a doubt!! ⁣⠀

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault Poruzots 2015 is a serious contender for my wine of the year, and it’s only January… It’s a fantastic white burgundy in my book. The fruit complexity of peach, custard apple, melon, and lime with floral blossoms all supported by a mineral backbone with reductive characteristics. Palate coating goodness with relentless length. Too bad the bottle emptied rather quickly! -

𝑬𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒖𝒙 𝑩𝒍𝒆𝒖𝒔, 2016

To a start, the nose had some matchstick, yeasty and croissant-like notes backed by some yellow apple. It opened up and offered fresh citrus, lemon peel, apricot, wax, honey, dried ginger and roasted nuts. Some smokey, stony and oystershell notes.

The palate is medium-bodied, tight and with a crispy and sharp acidity, that rounded over some time making it perfectly balanced. Ripe red apple, dried pear, lemon and red grapefruit, pickled ginger, fennel and walnut. Long finish, quite salt and super mineral.

• 24 months in French oak barrels (small and big)

Kenjiro Kagami is very highly spoken and pretty much on every Jura-lovers’ lips. Everything about this domaine is small, except for prices and the international demand.

The name ‘Miroirs’ itself is both a play on his name in Japanese and he believes in an expression of the “Mirror” between himself, the wines and the terroir.

𝑴𝒆𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒖𝒍𝒕-𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒓𝒊𝒆̀𝒓𝒆𝒔 1𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒓𝒖, 2015

Right in the middle of the Beverly Hills area of white wines, Côte du Beaune, Meursault is home to some of the most prestigeous Chardonnays in the world.

For 300 years, this domaine has been run by the Latour family, who merged with the Giraud family in 1958 to the current configuration.

Since the 90s, winemaker Jean-Pierre Latour has been the main figure and the man behind the domaine’s more recent succes - implementation of organic practices, lower yields, natural yeast and cellar investments.

* The 1er cru of Les Genevrieres, located in the kind of central-southern part of Meursault, are named after the juniper bushes planted next to the vineyard. The soils are mainly clay and limestone, and due to the location and the sun exposure of the slope, it’s often one of the earliest 1er crus to be harvested in Meursault. The wine profile are often fat and rich in structure with high minerality.

* Aged 15-17 months in barriques (25% new Allier and Vosges oak)

Unfortunately, it was quite closed this time. It slowly opened a bit, bit it lacked of intensity especially on the nose.

After some hours, the wine offered aromas of nectarine, peach, honey, bees wax, hay loft, lemoncurd and roasted pines. It was complemented by a hint of whipped cream and petrol, a bit of vanilla and chalk.

The palate is well balanced; medium-bodied, stony and mineral and medium+ acidity. Flavours of quince, Meyer lemon, fennel, whitecurrant and nuts. It’s a bit bitter on the finish at this stage.

Less full than expected and potential for higher score when not this closed.

👁 Medium garnet color with a pale rim. Looks a tad cloudy, assuming unfiltered·

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of dried cranberry, dried cherry, leather, fruit leather (aka roll-up), dried leaves, and licorice·

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium sandy tannins, medium alcohol, and medium- body. A lot of dried red fruit, leather, a touch of tar, prune, dried leaves, licorice, and smoke. The finish is medium+ length·

🔔 For being a completely random acquisition this came in with 0 expectations and is very rewarding. This is at its drinking peak and will hang here for awhile, but I do not foresee improvement. Stylistically a touch rustic, but still charming·

🥊 Round 5 of the Rosé Blind wine tournament. A good guess on the origin of this wine. Huge value proposition, but was slightly outclassed on gumminess by it's challenger·

ℹ️ This is a Vin de France 🇫🇷 Rosé with grapes coming from Muscadet and Touraine. The blend is 35% Gamay, 35% Merlot, 12% Grolleau, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Pineau d'Aunis, and 2% Pinot Gris. Sustainable vineyard practices. Full MLF and short aging on lees·

👃Low intensity on the nose. Light floral, wet rock, and red currant·

👄 The wine is dry, surprisingly high acidity, medium- alcohol, and medium body. Medium intensity on the palate. Flavors of red currant, strawberry, wet rock, steeliness, and green pepper. The finish is medium- length and ends on a green pepper and metallic note ·

🔔 I liked this bottling a lot more last year. Could this production have just skyrocketed 🚀 due to a hot 🔥trend? I ❤️ the packaging, but the juice was better last year. The low intensity on the nose and the flavors on the finish really knocked it down prior to learning what it was. ⚠️ this is still a lot of wine for $16 (remember it's 1L or 34 oz despite the name) and it is decent for the price. ℹ️ Yvon Métras is a modern day hermit wanting to spend his time with the vines and not dealing with exporters. He is less famous than the "Gang of Four" that were made famous by Kermit Lynch, but his wines have received a cult following nonetheless. His tenets include organic viticulture, harvest perfectly ripe old vine (up to 120 years old) Gamay, only ambient yeasts, extended semi-carbonic maceration, aging in neutral used oak barrels, and no fining or filtration. Minimal SO2 at bottling, but not before ·

👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe crunch raspberry, strawberry, and red currant. Followed by licorice, sunflower seeds, stems, and copious amounts of wet rocks. Very mineral nose for a red wine ·

👄 The wine is dry, medium lively acidity, medium fine silky tannins, medium alcohol, and medium body. More intense on the palate, this wine just pops to life. Ripe yet tart red fruits. Then hit with this black tea flavor, black licorice, and then rocks. Slight pleasant bitter note on the mineral finish of medium+ length ·

🔔 This is super yummy right now. I am actually thinking how great this would be in 5-7 years, but oh the restraint that you would need to have to cellar these babies. In the past I have had some issues of a yeasty flavor from Métras's wines, but not this batch. Also, I think 2014 is a superior vintage to 2015 based on my tasting notes. These wines are really hard to find, but well worth the price of entry. This wine is very Pinot-esque and will continue to resemble high end Burgundy as it ages 👏 ·

Domaine Yvon Clerget - Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets (93 pts)

ℹ️ This Domaine is currently under it's 28th generation with roots going back to the 13th century. 😱 These vines are currently around 60 years of age, around 40 at the time of bottling. In 2009 Yvon Clerget retired. Afterwards they sold the fruit until his son Thibaud completed is education and apprenticeship. His first vintage was in 2015 and apparently he has leveled up the wines 🍷·

👁 Medium garnet core with a pale tawny rim. Showing its age·

👃Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of dried cherry, dried strawberry, red plum, smoked meat, subtle oak, charcoal brick, and a touch of leather·

👄 The wine is dry, medium+ zippy acidity, medium- present and fine tannins, medium alcohol, and medium- body. Red plum, dried cranberry, dried cherry, dried leaves, cinnamon spice, smoke, and charcoal brick. The finish is medium+ length and picks up to end on ripe red fruit notes·

🔔 Review written on day 2. This wine has aged well, but is at peak and will hang here a bit before a slow decline. There is something beautiful about a wine at full maturity that cannot be replicated. The wine shows great acidity, tannins still have some grip, and the texture overall is wonderful. I love how everything has come together and with a nice dried red fruit flavor profile. A happy acquisition 😃 from auction, can't wait to taste the wines from

ℹ️ Both wines hail from Bordeaux, specifically both are right bank wines. They have a similar 🍇 grape composition that is Merlot dominant with Cabernet Franc rounding out the remainder. Pomerol is known for Clay soils, while St Emilion is known for Limestone soils. Both wines are Blue Chip wines of their respective commune·

ℹ️ This wine was tasted double blind aka zero context. Jean Foillard is regarded as the 'Master of Morgon'. This is one of the top cuvées of Beaujolais. This wine is 💯 Gamay. The vines are average 100 years old on granite schist soils. Traditional whole cluster semi-carbonic maceration. Aged in used oak barrels for 6-9 months·

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of overripe raspberry, strawberry, plum, dark cherry, stemmy, and some spices·

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium spicy tannins, medium alcohol, and medium+ body. Similar to nose with a touch of rocky minerality on the medium length finish·

🔔 Blind I called this wine a Moulin-à-Vent Cru Beaujolais with a few years of age. This was deep and brooding. The fruit was overripe and really missing alot of elegance. ⚠️ I am a huge fan of Domaine Jean Foillard and I absolutely love his Morgon Cote du Py and think it's way more elegant in the 2013 vintage. I was really let down when the wine was revealed to be Cuvee 3.14 😰 In Blind We Trust 😎·

👁 Medium gold color with consistent fine bubbles·

👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of yellow apple, pear, quince, white flowers, and a slight bread and butter note·

👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, and medium- body. Good texture from bubbles. Apple chips, quince, lemon zest, white flowers, and butter. The medium length finish has a nice apple skin and almost cinnamon stick note·

 has this for $19 a bottle. If you want mid-week bubbles this Crémant d'Alsace really delivers for the 💰·

ℹ️ Domaine was started in 1960 Lucien Aviet. His son Vincent works with him. They are traditionalists. Everything is hand harvested, all fruit is de-stemmed, indigenous yeasts, spontaneous fermentation, and aged in old large oak Foudres.  This Cuvée is named for the geologists who helped him choose where to place the which grape varieties. Vines are 40+ years old and planted in gravel on top of blue marl·

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe red currant, cherry, strawberry, violets, and wet rock·

👄 The wine is dry, medium+ lively acidity, medium- fine grained tannins (almost low), medium alcohol, and medium- body. Flavors of ripe crunchy red fruits. Sour cherry, cranberry, red currant, and strawberry. Followed by wet rock, slate, and an earthiness. Finish is long·

🔔 I know very little about this producer, but this is stunning juice. Elegant, pure fruit, and tons of minerality. Really balanced acidity, light tannins, and top notch finish. Snap these up if you can find them·

🙋‍♂️ What was the last wine that changed your image of a category of wine❓·

ℹ️ Let me start off by saying that I do not love rosé Champagne. This wine is 💯 Pinot Noir and 💯 from the 2008 vintage. Most importantly that this is from a single parcel in Montagne de Reims. It is name Les Terres Rouges due the redish brown topsoil on top of limestone. This wine is made in an interesting way with 50% of the fruit macerating for 25 hours (Saignée), while the other 50% is slowly pressed over 4 hours. Then left on its lees for 5 years. Disgorged in Feb 2014 with a dosage of 3.5 g/l ·

👃 Pronounced intensity on the nose. Aromas of dried strawberry, rose, red currant, rhubarb, Greek yogurt, toast, and saltine crackers ·

👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, low chalky tannins (there if you swish), medium alcohol, and medium body. Bubbles are fine and persistent. Palate is a bit more vibrant than the nose. Strawberry, cranberry, red currant, chalk, and cream. The long finish highlights rhubarb, rose, and blood orange ·

🔔 Consumed over 3 days this got better with air and was best at cellar temp. This is so different than most rosé Champagne that I have tasted, when it often feels like color was tacked on, as opposed to owning it and truly being a rosé. This is like a good red Burgundy with bubbles and that is probably the highest compliment I can pay it, outside of admitting than this is redefining a category of wines that had previously been lackluster to me ·

ℹ️ Fleurie may not have the historical pedigree of Moulin-à-Vent nor the stacked list of rock star producers like Morgon. It does have a great name and most importantly Yvon Métras. Fleurie is located between Moulin-à-Vent and Chiroubles. The Eastern side has sandy soils and is lighter and more floral like the wines of Chiroubles. The Western side the pink granitic soil contains trace amounts of Manganese like Moulin-à-Vent, which reduces grape yields and concentrates the berries ·

👁 Medium- ruby color, lighter than Moulin-à-Vent ·

👃Medium+ intensity on the nose. A little funk upon first opening. Aromas of soil, ripe raspberry, ripe cranberry, rose, rhubarb, and tomato leaf ·

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium- plush tannins, medium alcohol, and medium- body. Flavors are brieflyight red fruits, followed by some mineral rocky note. Then things get interesting with a florals. The medium+ length finish ends with what I can best describe as the water that you replaced from your Valentine's day rose bouquet 🥀 ·

🔔 This wine is super elegant, albeit lighter in style. It has a bit more complexity and intrigue than the Moulin-à-Vent. Tasted over 3 days and these just keep getting better and better each day. Highly recommend decanting them for full enjoyment. Now I want to try his Vieilles Vignes bottling 😰 if I can find it 🤷‍♂️ ·

2015 Domaine Font du Vent - Cuvée Etienne Gonnet Châteauneuf-du-Pape (94 pts)

ℹ️ This wine is from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the Southern Rhône of France. The wine is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 15% Mourvèdre. The Grenache vines are 100 to 120 years old, while the Syrah and Mourvèdre are 90 years old. The vines are from the famous lieu-dit of La Crau, which has soils made of clay and galets. All of the farming is certified organic, and grapes are hand-harvested. 50% to 100% of the stems are removed, depending on the vintage. The fermentation takes place with native yeasts, and the wine has 30 days of skin maceration. The Grenache is aged in concrete and wooden vats, with the Syrah and Mourvèdre demi-muids (600 L) barrels. This Cuvée is only made in exceptional vintages.

👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe raspberry, stewed cherries, strawberry preserves, rhubarb, prosciutto, dried leaves, white pepper, cinnamon, rosemary, elderflower, and violets.

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium spicy tannins, high alcohol (14.5%), and medium+ body. A long length finish of ripe and stewed red fruit with layers of florals, herbs, and spices.

🔔 This cuvée is stunning. While it is incredibly young, it can be enjoyed now with a good decant. La Crau is famous for a reason, and Guillaume Gonnet has a deft hand keeping this is extraordinarily fresh and elegant in a reasonably hot vintage. This wine will continue to improve in the bottle and should be outstanding in another five years. I am amazed that I didn't know about this Producer earlier, and I look forward to trying more of in the coming vintages.

2016 Domaine Le Galantin - Bandol Rosé (86 pts)

🥊 Round 1 of the Blind Rosé tasting tournament. This wine was defeated in the first round, not due to any flaws just going up against stiff competition·

ℹ️ This wine is a blend of 50% Mourvedre, 25% Grenache, and 25% Cinsault. The domaine is farmed organically, but not certified·

👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of ocean air, underripe strawberry, underripe peach, and white flowers·

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol, and full body. This wine is quite weighty on the palate. Good overall texture to the wine. Flavors of underripe peach, strawberry, hay, black pepper, and floral. A slight salty sea air note on the medium length finish·

🔔 Overall solid wine. Drink this is you want more weight than Provence style, but still restrained. The alcohol was a touch hot on the palate, not actually high alcohol just how it's integrated. The body of the wine was impressive. Would have liked a touch more acidity. Good stuff 👏·

1990 Château Léoville Las Cases - St. Julien (97 pts)

ℹ️ Château Léoville Las Cases is a Second Growth in St. Julien. They have 98 hectares under vine 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. An average vine age of 40 years old. The vineyard is mostly gravelly sand and clay. While the 1990 vintage was exceptional, Michel Delon declassified up to 60% of the crop ensuring that this wine was exemplary. Additionally they started utilizing reverse osmosis of grape must as early as the 1987 vintage, but unclear if it was used in a vintage like 1990 ·

👁 Medium ruby core with a faded garnet rim, but barely showing its age. Noticeable fine sediment on the side of the glass ·

👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium well integrated and extremely fine grained tannins, medium alcohol, and full body. A bit more wood and spice on the palate. Dried cherries and dried blackberry, cocoa powder, lead pencil, cedar, tobacco and leather are all still consistent on the palate. The long finish ends with tomato leaf, smoked meat and a black pepper tingle on the tongue ·

🔔 Now this wine makes up for all the clunkers that I don't post about! The texture on this wine is amazing it coats the palate, but changes from fruit notes to savory notes, then to spice notes then back again. I keep going back to the glass and witnessing it evolve from only a few minutes ago. Side note is that if I were tasting blind, I would be guessing Paulliac everytime. Regardless this is a Super Second from a fabulous vintage. Will continue to hold for a decade with proper storage, but is at full maturity ·

🙋‍♂️What was the last wine you bought because it was on sale❓·

 for $30 with a suggested price of $65. I was tipped off by a friend that worked at Treasury Wine Estates that these were good and balanced wines, especially at this price. This plot of land is located just above the Grand Cru Clos de Tart. The domaine uses minimal sulphur, indigenous yeasts, long vinifications, and no more than 1/3 new oak·

👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of dirt, dust, red currant, Bing cherry, tree bark, charcoal, and violets·

👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium spicy tannins, medium alcohol, and medium body. Great velvety texture. More fruit than earth on those. Red currant, Bing cherry, red plum, and cherry tomato. The oak flavors take over the mid palate with smokiness and tree bark. The finish is medium length with rocks and red fruits·

🔔 Well made wine. Scored without considering price. Super earthy nose with a brighter palate. Oak is noticeable, but not out of place. The texture makes this wine more complex and complete. This should improve for a few years. I am a big fan of 2014s in Burgundy and this just backs that up for their classic harmonious nature·
