I don't think Petaluma makes a bad wine. The whites are seriously good and the reds seem to tick all of my boxes. I recently had a 2015 Adelaide HIlls Shiraz and god it was good. Just a few extra years and the development was outstanding. Year on year they make wines that are above average.

Easy to buy at most large bottle shops. Even the Merlot (and you know I don't really review merlot) is very good. A review on that later.

A real consistent winery that I would recommend to anyone...simple...

I buy 6 of these every vintage because they last and age to perfection. Consistently one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in Australia for the price. Wines come and go, hitting a home run one vintage and then average the next. Wynns produce a great wine vintage after vintage.

These usually sell for anywhere between $28 and $36, but major retailers do from time to time have specials and I have seen in the low $20’s (I’ll let you know next time I see this)

With the 2012 receiving 98 points from Huon Hooke, the current vintage of 2016 getting 98 from Andrew Caillard MW along with a regular mid to high 90’s from a Halliday you can clearly see why I collect and cellar every vintage...simple...

So you want to store wines longer or you have a few expensive wines that you don’t want to put in the wine rack.

Cheaper Options for storage could include:

1️⃣ Buy a wine fridge from Gumtree or eBay. You’d be surprised how much money you can save. Obviously be aware of age and functionality but I got a $2400 fridge for $600. A divorce related sale (sorry for them, but great bargain for me) I’ve actually bought 3 wine fridges off

 has a 12 bottle wine fridge for $139 at the moment. Great starting point.

Now before anyone starts carrying on with humidity, perfect temperature and anything else. We have a brilliant invention called the screw cap, which removes alot of these issues related to the cork drying out. Remember this is simple advice and a starting point. Similarly with temperatures. Most important is having consistent temperature. Don’t cook it or freeze it but does it have to be exactly at 14 degrees?

Does having wine at 13 or 15 degrees make a massive impact? Especially only over a couple of years. This is basic advice, we are not keeping first growth Bordeaux for 40 years are we?

2️⃣ A lot of people store wine under the stairs. Perfect. Usually it’s in the centre of the house and dark. Great starting point but let’s improve it. Just get some insulation from Bunnings and line the walls of the stair case. You’d be surprised how much heat they can keep out. Or if that’s a bit messy. Try the foam insulation board (xps foam board, is one option) Have a google or You Tube

 foam board. Instead of your walls or roof, just line the area you want to store the wines. Cuts with a Stanley knife. Line the walls with the foam.

Anyway have a look around and see where you could have a cellar.

That’s how I started. First a small fridge, to under the stairs and then purpose built cellar.

Rating: Buy 🍷  2012 Reschke Vitulus Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. I only bought this last week because it was a 2012 vintage and was less than $25. It worked out as $3.40 per year of specialist cellaring. Anyway needs air and loads of it. It then opens up and I really start to enjoy it. Decanter or open at 6 and it will be ready when the kids go to bed

(hopefully that’s at 7:30 🕢) I’m hilarious

Recommendation: A Sunday afternoon special

Remember going on a Sunday Drive? Remember the time before everyone was so busy and there was only a couple of TV channels. A time with no internet, no mobile phone and no Netflix.

Dad would to turn to Mum and say “wanna go for a drive?” Before you knew we we were all in the car, windows down, driving down the coast or into the City.

I have no idea why, but I loved it. Driving then was fun. No bumper to bumper traffic, just the fresh breeze and exploring the small part of the world.

_wines have a different story and reason behind the name but either way there was something comforting about this wine. A familiar taste, a smell that made me as happy as sitting in the back seat on that Sunday Drive…simple…

 INTRODUCING Brand & Sons Coonawarra Brand & Sons is a

So the cigar title is actually named after the unique cigar-shaped strip of rich soil that defines the famous Coonawarra wine region. I thought it would be named after an actual cigar.

I know smoking is bad for you but even if you have never smoked a cigar, that word ‘cigar’ just creates images. Images of a darkened room, historical books, log fire, reclaimed timber and a well worn leather lounge. This wine is that image. The smell is of leather and old books.

For some reason I think of a famous photo of Jack Nicolson sucking on a big cigar. It’s just creates an image of not really giving a f@$k about anything.

This wine makes you relax and just enjoy the simple pleasure of crushed grapes in a glass...simple...

For me it had to be a Wynns Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.

Australia has so many great Cab Sav regions but one from Coonawarra, ticks all my boxes.

It is that quintessential Australian Cabernet and

 delivers the classic taste and flavour that I want. These also cellar forever and a must buy every vintage.
