Compelling, crucial, powerful protests of Banksy exhibition

Recommendation: A Bargain elegant light Pinot.

I love the wines that William Downie makes and if there is one winery I am bias about it is his range of wines. Not only do I adore his labels which feature iconic Australian landscapes from

 his ability to craft pinots makes them at the forefront of my shopping list.

This is my first taste of his Cathedral Pinot. I would say this is his entry pinot as most other ones are above $50.

But this is no where near an entry level wine. Most winemakers would be ecstatic to have such a wine, especially if it was the ‘cheaper one’.

It is a lot lighter than his other Pinots, but makes a beautiful impression especially if it is a night filled with more wine.

Rasberry nose and hint of five spice towards the end…simple…

Worth every cent. Outclasses and over delivers most other Rieslings, well above its price. It doesn’t try to hard or be the next new thing. It just gives that classic Western Australian taste.

Remember the art on this label. If you see it in the shelf, just buy it...simple...

So you can tick the box that you learnt something today: This grape is known as Mourvèdre in France and Monastrell in Spain.

So this is out there, from the label to the taste, the wine is completely different. It’s so good. Super dry, high acidity but it all works, my tongue tingles. The length just makes me want more.

Straight away I think of the song “High and Dry" by 90's band Radiohead. So;

Recommendation: The smell alone is worth the money.

What an unusual label. What do you see? I think it is beautiful. This was one of recent buy because of the label. This one was a real winner.

Amazing smell, it is vanilla with a tiny hint of the tropics. Such a great smell. The taste is elegant and rich with a savoury note towards the end.

You get a great barrel flavour with a lingering finish. So much going on with the smell and the flavour.

Medium Shiraz that has great balance that is very easy to drink. Repeat very easy to drink.

Recommendation: Strong Buy. Lives up to the Hype.

This is one scary label. Stuff of nightmares. Those black teeth and the one red eye that pierces your soul.

Before even opening the wine, I’m intrigued, slightly possessed by this label. I must know more. A quick check and the label is original artwork created by British artist

Now this is where it gets interesting. Del Naja also known as 3D, who is a founding member of the band Massive Attack. Famous for their hits Unfinished Sympathy and Teardrop.

But it then takes another turn. Del Naja is rumoured to be Banksy.

Banksy is an anonymous England based street artist that uses graffiti and a stencilling technique that combines dark humour with art. From London to New York, Banksy has created his artwork across the globe. Banksy recently made more world wide headlines after he shredded one of his paintings immediately after it was sold at auction for a record £1,042,000. Within seconds of the auction finishing, the painting began shredding itself. The shredder built into the frame stopped when the canvas was about half-way through. Banksy has later said this stoppage was unplanned and that he intended to shred the entire thing. The artwork is now on display in Germany and worth even more than the original auction price.

Back to the wine. How the hell did this famous, mysterious, possible Banksy end up on a Pinot Noir from Tasmania?

That bit I don’t know. Either way what a great story or rumour.

Delicious and outrageously good. Scary yet beautiful. Loved it without fail.

My eldest started High School. Not only did I feel old, I just wondered where the hell has that time gone.

To celebrate, I decided on a Dormilona Clayface Shiraz. Not only as it is a brilliant wine but the label is truely a piece of art.

I’ve reviewed Dormilona wines a few times and by now you should know I love everything they make.

Baron Philippe Rothschild, one of the leading personalities when it comes to the modernization of Bordeaux, was also the main figure behind Mouton-Rothschild as we know it today.

Besides many achievements, he became the only person to succeed in changing the 1855 classification: Château Mouton Rothschild officially became a “Premier Cru Classé” with the 1973 vintage.

Every vintage since 1945, an artist has been chosen to put their design on the label.

This is the first wine since the Premier Grand Cru Classe promotion with a label designed by Pablo Picasso.

It’s an hommage to Pablo Picasso, who left the world same year.

A little anxious when uncorking the bottle - quite a soaked cork. But wow! Big, big wine ahead.

After 10 min, the odor of basement had already left the wine, leaving a very elegant and matured profile.

The bouquet was mild and appealing with notes of red wild berries (surprisingly present), charcuterie, pepper, sweet tobacco, red pressed flowers, rust, truffle, old wooden drawer, pencil shavings, dry brown leaves, eucalyptus and menthol.

After some time, it increased its weight and became more ripe on the nose: strawberry (almost classic Beaujolais-like), fresh roses, warm greenhouse, fresh chili and baked tomato.

The palate was medium-bodied, silky and non-tannic with a sexy acidic touch. Mixed dried red berries, raw liquorice, white mushrooms, menthol, cold-brew coffee and a hint of iron and salt. It gained a lot of red bell pepper on the tongue, and also a funny quick “whiplash” of fresh chili.

Mercurey 1er Cru “Le Clos l’Évêque”, 2016

📍Mercurey, Côte Chalonnaise, Bourgogne, France🇫🇷

This domaine is located at Château du Bourgneuf in the heart of the village of Mercurey in the central Bourgogne, producing super elegant and classic Pinot Noirs from some of the best sites in the area, acquired during a history of family-winemaking dating back to 1870.

The vineyard of “Le Clos l’Évêque” is known for producing some of the softest, fruitiest and most meaty PNs of the area - and for its consistency of quality.

Suremain’s wines are aged in 10-15% new oak for 16-18 months.

The bouquet only needed a few minutes to show it’s potential. Characterized by dark, sweet and spicy aromas of blueberry compote, mix of fresh cherry and amarena cherry, sweet liquorice, black tea, cocoa, gravel and fresh topsoil.

The medium-bodied palate offered cherry, dried cranberry, wild strawberry, spicy vanilla, white pepper and a hint of burnt caramel.

The tannic level is quite low, perfectly balanced with the acidity to make a velvety structure with a nice crisp and a mineral firmness.

This is indeed a dark PN, but more elegant than many Mercureys I’ve had before.

And this is indeed a lovely value-for-money wine.

It’s definitely drinking well now, but further aging won’t harm. It could also be enjoyed just after release to hit it at its juiciest state.  At Philipson Wine, different vintages are available (from vintage 2012 to the upcoming 2018)

 ⭐️86/100⭐️ Domaine de Suremain Mercurey 1er Cru “Le Clos

Testalonga was established in 2008 by Craig and Carla Hawkings. Located in the district of Swartland, Coastal Region north of Cape Town, Testalonga is a part of what’s called “the second revolution”. The first revolution was after the ending of the apartheid in the 90’s, which also led to the end of KWV (“Cooperative Winemakers Union”) and it’s iron grip of the wine sector, that led to the birth of the modern South African wine industry. Since the last few years, a second revolution is now happening - less dramatic, but still very interesting.  In the relatively conservative wine country, new generations of winemakers are putting their mark on the industry experimenting with natural and biodynamic philosophies, sometimes mixed with ancient South African techniques and grape varieties.

El Bandito is Testalonga’s higher valued series of wines - this one’s called “Skin”, referring to the 10 days of skin contact (maceration). The wine is barrel fermented and aged in old barrels of 300 and 500 liters.

The winery is only producing 100% natural wines from old bush vines - nothing added or manipulated.

The wine offers lovely and interesting aromas of tangerine, mirabelle plum, apple skin, white tea with chamomile, lemon curd, fresh ginger, orange blossom, yeast and acacia honey finishing with some very sour volatile applecider vinegar-like scent.

The palate isn’t as beautiful and interesting as the aromas.

It’s got a medium body with medium acidity and a tiny tannic touch - just enough to give some structure. Flavors of pear cider and unripe peach followed by unripe mirabelle plum, white pepper, cloves and a green bitterness. The finish is quite short with hints of raw liquorice and salt.
