Penfolds Grange is arguably Australia’s most famous wine and the 2010 is considered to be the 21st centuries reference Grange, the one that all others are measured against. -

It’s describes as being deep crimson and having intense liquorice, dark plum, blackberry, praline aromas with beautifully balanced malty, mocha, spicy oak notes. The palate is richly textured, dense and powerful with generous deep-set sweet blackberry, dark plum, mulberry, inky, dark chocolate flavours, rich mocha espresso notes, fine dense graphite textures, superb mid-palate richness and underlying roasted chestnut notes.

This is one for the ages and it’ll be left, undisturbed, for another 15 years before I even consider a look! -

For me it’s a fantastic wine from vintage of the decade in Piedmont. Bruno Rocca Langhe Nebbiolo 2016. Such an awesome expression of Nebbiolo that’s beautiful now and clearly going to evolve for years to come. It’s entry level for Bruno Rocca wines made from Barbaresco vineyards with younger vines, up to 15 years old. It packs an awesome flavour punch to complete with the bigger names and price tags for sure. I can’t wait to explore more of what they have to offer! This could easily become an addiction.... Glad I’m stocking up!! 🍷🍇

This bottle screams handmade, small-batch, loveliness. Made each year from Ashton Hills vineyard cuttings some 20 years old on a plot no bigger than a tennis court. Whole bunch, basket pressed, minimal intervention winemaking here from the Adelaide Hills. .

Recommendation: Buy. Coastal sea breeze in a glass.

Is it me or has there been an explosion of Semillon blended with Fiano recently? Not that is a bad thing. Winemakers are really pushing the boundaries and blending this mainly Italian grape with semillion to create a unique combination that I am loving at the moment.

Varney Wines have create a wine that screams coastal happiness. I can smell the ocean and feel the breeze.

With a 60% Semillon, 40% Fiano blend this is one to remember. A young white wine that gives plenty of texture and backend flavour with a with a bite that is subtle but makes to reach for another sip.

I think this is worth the price and clearly rated as 'Great'...simple...

Recommendation: Buy. It’s a Cool Italian Style red.

The Balmy Red is made from Sangiovese grown in the Adelaide Hills. With a beautiful Miami summer vibe on label, it screams Sunday arvo.

Recommendation is to lightly chill it. Then from me, crack it open with some mates on a late arvo as the sun is setting. Serve with some angel hair pasta tossed in fresh tomato and garlic...simple...

This has to be my benchmark for Australian Sauvignon Blanc. I love it.

It used to be my regular midweek wine and must admit I took it for granted, especially when it use to be around 20 bucks.

Like most things, price has steadily increased, but with this wine, I think is price rise is justified and deserved.

The Viticulture, the winemaking and constant quality delivers a beautiful wine year after year.

But don’t get me wrong, I wish they were still $20.

My Dad is a beer drinker and doesn’t drink red but occasionally he has a white wine and without question this is always his favourite...simple...

Built for lunch. Gentle but levels of structure that shine through. If you haven’t had Nebbiolo before, try this.

“Black Label” Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005

In the beautiful and world-class winemaking area of McLaren Vale, Lee Flourentzou founded Aramis Vineyards in 1998, naming it after the great character, Aramis, from Alexandre Dumas’ legendary story about the three musketeers.

The team is dedicated to producing fine wines that reflect the area in the most elegant and precise way with both Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz as the main focus.

This is a single vineyard wine from one of Aramis’ best plots located 7km southwest of the township of McLaren Vale.

The wine is very classic and matured in a mix of French and American oak for 18 months (40% new).

This Cab is just perfectly matured showing great depth and energy with a bouquet offering heavy notes of blackcurrant followed by sweet tobacco, charcoal from the wood, matured and dried meat, eucalyptus and muddy iron.

The palate is rich and powerful with a dark fruity base of blackcurrant and prunes complimented by baked red bell pepper, dark chocolate, mocha and lots of vanilla with a minty finish.

The tannins a fully integrated and extremely velvety due to the age and there’s just enough acidity left to balance the full-bodied wine (it might have shown a slightly more elegant palate some years ago).

This wine really took me back to McLaren Vale. Miss this amazing place a lot!

 ⭐️87/100⭐️ Aramis Vineyards “Black Label” Cabernet Sauvignon

Poppelvej is a micro winery located in McLaren Vale south of  Adelaide, Australia. It’s owned and run by Danish Uffe with help from his brother Jens, who’s fruit are all from eco sustainable vineyards and the philosophy is based on natural and biodynamic principles and lo-fi production.

The name “Poppelvej” (pronounced “pop-el-vei”) is the name of the street in Denmark where Uffe and Jens grew up. “Poppeltræ” is Danish for poplar tree and “vej” means street.

A special thing about this wine is, that the fruit is harvested from the tiny Dabinett Vineyard at the nabour’s property  located on soils with an extreme level of salinity, visualized by the white surface on the ground and the low-crop vines.  Because of the naturally low crop, the few grapes are gaining superb quality.

The wine is whole bunch fermented and aged 10 months in concrete eggs before an unfined and unfiltered hand bottling.

The production is super limited and only available in Australia, Denmark and the USA.

The bouquet is lighter and fresher than expected from a Syrah, offering blackcurrant/blueberry compote, thyme, rosemary, a bit of balsamico and a slightly metallic touch.

The palate is medium-bodied with just a marked acidity and a low tannic level - it’s super smooth. The wine offers blackcurrant, sour cherry, green olives and shit loads of salt!

I’ve never experienced a red wine with such a crazy salty flavor profile (it’s not just a hint of salt...). It might be a little overwhelming, but with the right food, it works perfectly😁And it is very interesting.

 ⭐️87/100⭐️ Poppelvej “Somewhere”, 2019 📍McLaren Vale, SA

Established by David Powell in 1994 and deeply influenced by his time in Scotland: Torbreck is the name of the forest where David used to work as a lumberjack, and many of the wines share the same kind of tribute.

Today, the winery stands out as one of the best reputed of Australia, combining the fruit and spice from AUS with the elegance of Rhône.

“The Struie” is named after a hill near to the Glenmorangie Distillery in Scotland. The wine combines the best from the warm valley floor in Barossa and from the high-altitude vineyards located in Eden Valley, which helps the grapes maintaining their freshness due to the milder micro climate.

Only old vines, +50 years (Eden V.) and +80 years (Barossa floor) are used, followed by 20 months in French barrique (15% new).

The bouquet is concentrated and powerful offering notes of blackcurrant compote, baked berry crumble, dark plum, smoky bacon chunks, charcoal, espresso, sweet tobacco, dried herbs, pepper and a sick scent of umami (a bit hoisin/teriyaki-like).

The palate is rich, almost creamy, without being jammy and super intense with flavors of blackcurrant, black pepper, brown sugar, spicy vanilla, cola, burnt brownie and a very long and complex finish of smoky whisky and menthol.

The tannins are present but soft, and the acidity remarkably vibrant.

Just wow! Complex and calling for an Aussie barbecue...

 ⭐️92/100⭐️ Torbreck Vintners “The Struie”, 2003’’ 📍Barossa

Winemaking has taken place at the estate of Pirramimma since the foundation by Alexander Campbell Johnston in 1892.

ACJ named his newly achieved land “Pirramimma”, an aboriginal phrase meaning “the moon and the stars”.

It’s been a family affair ever since and is now in the hands of Geoff Johnston, under who’s guidance, Pirramimma has seen many significant changes: Expansion of vineyards and different varieties planted, modern winemaking facilities and a greener, more sustainable approach to agriculture and winemaking.

“White Label Shiraz” 2004  is quite a limited released wine harvested from one of their best sites in McLaren Vale.

It’s aged 24 months in 100% new barriques before bottling.

Powerful potpourri of dark berries (blackberry, cherry, and blackcurrant) with hints of baked plums followed by delicious scents of cigar box, vanilla, coconut, dark chocolate, burned bacon fat, leather, bay leaves, pepper, brown sugar, superbly integrated oak and dry forrest floor.

The palate is full-bodied with great and well-integrated tannins making a velvety structure. It’s perfectly balanced between fruit and spices offering blueberry, blackcurrant compote, prunes, roasted almonds, spicy vanilla, espresso, sweet tobacco, cloves, menthol and an olive-like and mineral finish.

Even the alcoholic level is well hidden in both the bouquet and on the palate.

Not to forget about the brown-edged color… It’s perfectly aged!

This wine is pure satisfaction, and really an impressive Shiraz!

Every time I smell their wines, it reminds me of my lovely visit at their estate back in 2016.

- It was blinded both as a well matured Bordeaux and Bolgheri by my fellow wine nerds.
