𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒐 “𝑨𝒍𝒃𝒆”, 2010 📍Barolo, Piemonte, Italy🇮🇹 🍇100% Nebbiolo ⚡️ 14,5 % Tasted: June 2021 Aldo Vaira began working at the estate in the late 1960s with a goal of converting much a the vineyards to organic farming, which resulted in certification in 1971 as one of the first in Barolo. Located in the village of Vergne (3 km west of Barolo), Vajra is mainly focusing on high altitude-Barolos, but they also grow Dolcetto, Barbera, Pinot Nero, Riesling and Moscato.

The discrepancy between the family name “Vaira” and the winery name “Vajra” stems from a printing error from the first bottling in 1972 which made the “i” look like a “j” on the logo. The name “Albe” is plural of the Italian alba, which in this context, means dawn. It’s a multi-cru Barolo harvested from three vineyards: Fossati, Le Coste di Vergne and La Volta (400-450 MAMSL).
When the sun rises in the morning, it takes about 20 minutes for the sunlight to reach each vineyard - so, there are three different albe [dawns].” Traditional methods are used in the cellar with long maceration and 42 months in 25-75 hl Slavonian barrels. After lots of air to the wine, a very intense, dark, and elegant bouquet was revealed, offering dark (slightly candied) cherry and strawberry followed by floral notes of lavender and rose petals, orange oil, chocolate, mint, rosemary (and some mixture of medicinal herbs) and a gentle touch of fresh leather and wet terra cotta pots. The palate had quite a full body with softened tannins and a vibrant medium acidity (mouthfeel like a full-bodied cranberry juice) with notes of both sour unripe cherry and fully ripened (almost sweet) cherry, dried blackberry, English liquorice, tobacco, cinnamon, tar and charcoal and flint. Incredibly long finish of dried berries, mint and iron. Brilliant Barolo! One of the finest that I’ve tried in its price range.
