⭐️88+/100⭐️ 𝑩𝒓𝒖𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑶𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆, 2018 📍Calce, Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon, France🇫🇷 🍇 100% Macabeu ⚡️10% Tasted: March 2021 Some more juicy stuff from one of my favorite winemakers! The Brutal wine cooperation (related to the cult Barcelona wine bar, Bar Brutal) is a loose cooperation of natural winemakers. To be “accepted” into the club, the winemaker has to make a “brutal” wine (in one way or another…) - super low intervention (natural) and sometimes only one batch of it. It has to stand out as a funky or extreme wine - it can be some sort of experimental wine as well. Biodynamic/natural viticulture, handpicked grapes, whole bunch fermentation, 30 days maceration, basket press and elevated a few months in 500-liter demi-muids. For a “Brutal!”, it’s not very brutal… In fact, it’s a bit underwhelming to a start (but opens up over two hours). But the color is sick!!! The aromas are not very expressive in the beginning, but notes of fresh orange peel, perfumed orange oil and mirabelle compote makes it a delicious juice. Over time it offered more complexity with apricot, candied ginger, fresh almonds, acacia and flower field. There’s a nice green touch of veggies and raw (washed and cut) potatoes too. The palate has got a nice grainy texture - creamy, low acidity and great tannins. Red apple, multi fruit juice, apricot, dried slices of oranges, ginger and over-steeped black tea - slightly mineral too. A shame this one is a bit too introvert (more closed than a year ago). It’s elegant but lacks of funk (brutality) on all parametres.
