⭐️92+/100⭐️ Gut Oggau Weiss, 2016 📍Oggau am Neusiedler See, Burgenland, Austria🇦🇹 🍇Grüner Veltliner / Gewürztraminer / Pinot Blanc / Welschriesling ⚡️12,5 % Tasted: September 2020 Gut Oggau is a biodynamic wine project located in the small village of Oggau in Burgenland. Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe began the project back in 2007, when they bought and restored a 17th century winery, that had been abandoned for more than 20 years - vineyards included. The vines were standing untouched as long as the winery, which was perfect, as that allowed the Tscheppes to immediately begin working biodynamically with their viticulture. Today, they are fully Demeter-certified and one of the most well known austrian natural wineries. 2016 was a challenging vintage in Burgenland. Spring frost and hail storms during the summer plagued the wineries leaving only around 40% of the harvest. However, autumn and was brilliant securing that the surviving grapes hit top quality, but unfortunately there wasn’t enough fruit to produce all the “family members” in Oggau’s wine portfolio.
Instead, 2016 is called “The Family Reunion”: Only a white, rosé and red wine were made: “Weiss” (white) is a mixture of: - Theodora (Grüner Veltliner & Welschriesling) - Timotheus (Grüner Veltliner & Pinot Blanc) - Emmeram (Gewürztraminer) - Mechthild (Grüner Veltliner) The grapes are hand harvested and partly destemmed, then 1/3 of the must is macerated for 3 weeks while the rest are direct pressed. The wine is blended and aged 11 months in 500-liter barrels. Unfined and unfiltered bottling with zero additions. The wine has got super expressive aromas of ripe yellow pear, white peach, roasted sesame, freshly baked croissant, browned butter, beeswax, tar and rubber followed by a perfumed scent of chamomile and herbs. The palate is zippy with a medium body and acidity. Despite of the maceration, the tannic level is almost at zero.
Lemon peel, apricot, nectarine, honeydew, brioche, white tea and white pepper on the tongue with a long salty finish. Spottet at @naturalwinedealers
