⭐️88/100⭐️ Mother Rock Liquid Skin, 2019 📍Swartland, South Africa🇿🇦 🍇100% Chenin Blanc ⚡️11,5 % Tasted: September 2020 Winemaker Johan Meyer is a rising star in the ever-emerging South African wine industry in a very short time. After seeing the market quickly drink up his initial label, “Force Majeure” (“Force Celeste” in the US), he expanded the offerings by including a new label, “Mother Rock”, to his portfolio in collaboration with his UK importer, Ben Henshaw from Indigo Wines. The wines are all sustainable and each focusing on the different terroirs of South Africa. Chenin Blanc is the root of the whites, while the reds contains a few different classic varieties. The “Liquid Skin” is a zippy orange wine made from 100% whole cluster Chenin Blanc with 9 weeks (!) of maceration followed by 10 months in neutral French 500 liter barrels on the lees. Grapes are harvested from a dry-farmed, southeast facing bush vine plot planted in 1973 on the outskirts of Malmesbury. It has been farmed organically since 2009. The soils are granitic sands with Koffie Klip (iron-rich duricrust) over clay. Besides the incredible color, the wine offers some mild yet quite complex and energic tutti-frutti aromas of pineapple, ripe kiwi, gooseberry, elderflower and salak (snake skin fruit). There’s a fine green touch of olives, fresh leaves and fermented lemon. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly creamy texture and some soft yet marked tannins.
A taste of elderflower, ripe gooseberry, mango, tangerine and sour lemon is followed by white wine gum and mild acacia.
