⭐️85/100⭐️ Philippe Pacalet Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru, 2014 📍Beaune, Cóte d’Or, Bourgogne, France🇫🇷 🍇 100% Pinot Noir ⚡️12,5% Tasted: June 2020 Philippe Pacalet was born into a family of winemakers whose tradition in the craft dates back to 1780. He is an oenologist graduate who majored in organic winemaking - he is known as one of the first natural wine producers in Bourgogne. Not that his wines are funky or outrer at all, in fact, they are the totally opposite. Philippe masters the ability to read the process in the vineyards such as in the cellars so well, that there’s no need for bigger human interventions during the vinification - there’s only a minimum of sulphites added too. Furthermore he’s known to master the involvement of wood in the wines, which often works as a tiny spice, but never overtakes the main ingredient - grapes and their terroir.
He’s an excellent example of a “hands-on negociant”, due to the fact that he collaborates with the farmers consulting them in the vineyards from buds to grapes, before he takes over the control in the cellars. This 1er Cru is made from three parcels: 50% Les Gruenchers, 25% Chabiots and 25% Les Feusselotes with lots of limestone and a bit of clay.
Whole cluster fermentation with natural yeast, followed by 14-18 months in neutral barrels. The bouquet offers a fragrant scent of dried floral notes complimented by super fresh cherry, black hibiscus tea, wet gravel and white champignon. It’s not super expressive, and it took quite some time in the glass to really wake up - might be the lightest C-M I’ve ever had. The palate is light and super silky. Fine and easy going tannins but an acidity, that seems a little off. Flavors of cherry, dried raspberry, moss and nutmeg. The finish is fresh with hints of chalk.
To summarize, the wine is lovely(!) but a bit too introvert in my opinion and lacks of complexity. The “problem” might be, that it’s maybe a little out of equilibrium - might need to be enjoyed very young or slightly older than in this case. Don’t know...
