2017 Domaine Weinbach - Pinot Gris Cuvée Ste. Catherine (91
7/8/2021, 7:51:06 AM 2017 Domaine Weinbach - Pinot Gris Cuvée Ste. Catherine (91 pts) @domaineweinbach @vineyardbrands @drinkalsace · ℹ️ The wine is 💯 Pinot Gris from Alsace, France. The grapes come from three different vineyards each with a unique soil. First, the monopole vineyard of the Clos des Capucins with sandy silt soil on granitic pebbles. Also, the bottom of the Grand Cru Schlossberg with granitic soil. Finally, the younger vines from the Grand Cru Marckrain with limestone-marl soil. The vineyards are farmed organically and Biodynamically. Hand harvested, indigenous yeast fermentation, and aged in large old neutral oak vats for 8-10 months· 👁 Pale gold color· 👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe peach, yellow apple, baked quince, nectarine, cream, yogurt, lemon pith, wax and smoke· 👄 The wine is off-dry (~15 g/l), medium acidity, high alcohol, and medium+ body. A medium+ length finish of ripe peach and wax that was slightly bitter· 🔔 This wine is extremely young, especially given the producer's pedigree. There is a lot of concentration in this wine. It is weighty and expressive, especially on the palate. The alcohol is 14.5% ABV, but it holds it well and is not showing any heat. The residual sugar is quite noticeable now due to the moderate acidity. From my experience with these wines the RS seems to become less obvious with bottle age, but a little sugar never hurt anyone. A fine example of Alsatian Pinot Gris. 👏
