2011 Obsidian Ridge - Half Mile (89 pts) @obsidianwineco · ℹ️ The wine was tasted blind in a flight of 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, the percentage wasn't listed on tech sheets, but said that the proportion of Petit Verdot was significantly higher than the typical 2-5%. As mentioned in previous posts 2011 was a very cool summer in Northern California. This vineyard is planted at 2300-2640 ft, the latter equates to a half mile and is where the wine gets it's name. The vineyard stayed sunny and dry even if temperatures were not high. This resulted in a long hang time for the grapes and that were harvested 3 weeks later than normal. The wine was aged for 34 months in Hungarian oak barrels with 💯 new oak· 👁 Deep ruby color with a pale rim· 👃 Medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of oak, cedar, ripe blackberry, black plum, blueberry, VA, floral, violets, mint, and clove· 👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, high ripe furry tannins, high alcohol, and full body. A medium length finish of blackberry, blueberry, and clove· 🔔 A solid wine, that did really well in a cooler vintage. The Petit Verdot makes sense in the blend adding blue fruit, florals, and spice. This doesn't totally read as a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant wine. This is still very much alive at 8 years of age with more room to go. Not sure if it will improve more over time. I will say the Obsidian Ridge entry level wine is a great value and I need to revisit the Half Mile in a normal vintage.
