5/16/2021, 1:49:21 AM 2013 Clos de Mez - Morgon Chateau Gaillard (86 pts) @clos _de_mez @fassselectionswine · ℹ️ This wine is was tasted single blind with a theme of thin skinned red wines. This wine is 💯 Gamay from the Cru of Morgon in Beaujolais. This wine is not made with Carbonic Maceration. It is made in the same that a Pinot Noir would be made in Burgundy· 👁 Medium ruby color· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of fennel, artichoke, thyme, candied strawberry, white pepper, black cherry, oak, and roasted pepper· 👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium ripe tannins, medium alcohol, and medium body. A medium length finish of strawberry, fennel, and white pepper· 🧠 Key Features - The green-ness of this wine was driving me to think Cabernet Franc, but that is outside of the thin skinned theme. The garrigue and white pepper aromas could be Grenache from the Rhone or south of France. Gamay can have white pepper, but not getting any notes of Carbonic Maceration and there is a definite oak influence. Although the alcohol seems very low Grenache. I am a bit lost here. Final guess 2016 Gigondas of a decent quality level· 🔔 Clearly some logic issues here with my deduction. This wine is made in a Burgundian style using Gamay 🍇. One of the appealing things about Gamay in how it is traditionally made is how appealing the fruit character can be. While herbal and spice notes are pleasant, but they seem atypical for me. I am really curious about the exact nature of the green-ness in this wine that I don't normally associate with Gamay. Interesting wine, but my expectations of wines from Morgon are quite high. Side note - This wine is no longer imported by Fass Selections· 😎 In Blind, We Trust
