1994, 2001 & 2005 Domaine Leflaive - Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru @domaine _leflaive @wilsondaniels · 🙋‍♂️ Have you tried Grand Cru White Burgundy wine❓If yes, what was it❓· ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Chardonnay from Bâtard-Montrachet in Burgundy, France. Bâtard-Montrachet is a grand cru appellation in the Côte de Beaune between the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. There are 5 Grand Crus between these 2 villages. In Bâtard-Montrachet the soils are brown limestone which are deeper and more clay rich at the foot of the slope. Domaine Laflaive have 1.73 ha of the Grand Cru across 4 parcels all planted from 1962-1989. Wine is gently pressed, 24 hour settling, and alcoholic fermentation in cask (25% new). Aged 12 months in cask with an additional 6 months in tank before being bottled. Light fining and filtering as needed. This was tasted @lapaulee vertical tasting· 🍷1️⃣ 2005 - Medium lemon color. Wow! Pronounced nose. Ripe yellow apple, white peach, nectarine, kumquat, and orange zest. Creamy texture to the wine. Full body, but still zippy acidity. Long layered finish· 🍷2️⃣ 1994 - First off no premox, but I did heard about bottle variation while at the event. My bottle showcased the beauty of aged white Burgundy. Dried apple, dried apricot, burnt orange peel, and some sweet oak spice. Medium+ length. Really surprised me· 🍷3️⃣ 2001 - The biggest outlier of the 3, this was hedonistic and flamboyant. Medium gold color. Pronounced tropical nose. Grilled pineapple, mango, ripe apple, and ripe peach. Full bodied and creamy. Medium+ length finish of high end fruit cocktail· 🔔 These are large powerful wines while still maintaining a lot of energy and verve to them. The 2005 was runner up for white wine of the event. Shocked on how well the bottle of 1994 showed, not known as a long lived vintage. I remarked to Brice de la Morandière about the quality and he said "not bad, right?". Not bad indeed! 💪. The 2001 was delicious, but it was almost "new worldly". Again surprised by 2001 as it's not known as a super ripe vintage. Very educational and I love it when producers dig into their vault to share the beauty and longevity of aged wines. 🙏
