1984 Caves São João - Porta dos Cavaleiros Reserva Branco (86 pts) @cavessaojoao @obrigadovinhos · 🙋‍♂️ Have you tried a wine from the Dão region❓· ℹ️ This is a white wine from the Dão region of Portugal. Northern half of Portugal, south of the Duoro, and halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the border of Spain. The wine is 40% Cercial Branco, 20% Bical, 20% Malvasia, and 20% Encruzado. Planted in granite and schist soils at 450 m. Made using open top fermenters with extended skin maceration. Aged for 24 months in concrete before being filtered and bottled· 👁 Deep amber color· 👃 Medium- intensity on the nose. Aromas of smoke, dried leaves, tobacco, sage, orange zest, dried apricot, dried apple, cinnamon, and apple cider· 👄 The wine is dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, and full body. A medium length finish that has a bitterness to it, but also dried leaves and dried flowers· 🔔 Anyone that knows me well, knows that I love aged wines. In this case, this is still an interesting wine, but I think this specific bottle would have been better 5-10 years ago. I have a ton of respect for Caves São João that have a huge stockpile of wines that they are aging. This bottle was hand carried back from the winery.
