2003 Château Suduiraut - Sauternes (90 pts) @chateausuduiraut @vintuswines · 🙋‍♂️ What is your favorite Sauternes other than Château d'Yquem❓· 🗓0️⃣8️⃣ Wine Advent Calendar· This wine was the only sweet wine chosen for the calendar. This fell outside of the trget price range because I wanted to get something with age· ℹ️ This wine is a blend of 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyard size is quite large and located near the famed Château d'Yquem. Average vine age is around 30 years old. Vinified in oak barrels then aged an additional 18-24 months in oak of which 50% is usually new· 👁 Deep Amber color· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of overripe peach, baked pineapple, orange marmalade, dried apricot, botrytis, honey, new plastic toy, candied ginger, oak, vanilla, coconut, and guava· 👄 The wine is lusciously sweet, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol, and full body. Medium+ length finish of peach cobbler a la mode topped with honey· 🔔 2003 was a hot year in Bordeaux and this is ripe and viscous even by Suduiraut standards. There is decent acidity, but it's barely fighting back against the overwhelming residual sugar and concentration of the wine. This still has life in it, but I doubt this will continue to improve it is just a tad hedonistic albeit enjoyable. This wine is $60. It is the most expensive wine in the calendar, but if you think that this is a wine with 15 years of age from a top Chateau in Sauternes then it is actually pretty reasonable. If you like sweet wines, then I recommend looking for aged Sauternes as they can be quite affordable.
