2014 John Duval Wines - Plexus Barossa Valley (91 pts) @johnduvalwines @oldbridgecellars · 🙋‍♂️ Do you like to qualify fruit descriptors by adding underripe, ripe, overripe, etc❓· 🗓0️⃣7️⃣ Wine Advent Calendar· This wine was chosen to show a modern Australian wine. Originally, I thought this was more Grenache dominant and wanted it as a comparison for the previous wine, oh well 🤷‍♂️· ℹ️ This wine is a blend of 47% Shiraz, 32% Grenache, and 21% Mourvedre. This comes from Barossa Valley, Australia. Winemaking happens in stainless steel fermenters. The wine is barrel aged for 14 months with only 10% being new and the balance is 3-6 year old barrels· 👁 Deep ruby color with a pale rim· 👃 Pronounced intensity on the nose. Aromas of ripe black plum, raspberry, strawberry preserves, eucalyptus, menthol, licorice, lavender, and root beer· 👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ fine ripe tannins, high alcohol, and medium+ body. A noticeable creamy texture. A long finish of strawberry preserves and lilacs· 🔔 This wine is $30. The wine is very ripe and skirts the line deftly to not be overripe. Notice I used the word "preserves" above, as the word jam has so many negative connotations. I use preserves to represent concentrated ripeness in a refined way like something you would get from a farmer's market. This wine has a lot going on - it has great concentration, good texture, and overall balance. The length of the finish is very impressive, especially with the floral nature of it. I have had John Duval wines blind several times and while they are always clearly Australian and they are always impeccably made. 👏
