2016 Obsidian Ridge - Obsidian Ridge Vineyard Estate
12/5/2021, 9:53:28 AM 2016 Obsidian Ridge - Obsidian Ridge Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (90 pts) @obsidianwineco · 🗓0️⃣2️⃣ Wine Advent Calendar· My goal was to target an average price of $30 per bottle with the hypothesis being that quality wine can be had from $20-$40. This wine was chosen to highlight and represent California Cabernet Sauvignon· ℹ️ The winery and vineyard are named for the black glossy obsidian rocks that are in the volcanic soils of the Red Hills Lake County. The vineyard elevation is from 2300 to 2640 ft. 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec. This is aged in Hungarian oak for 16 months with 45% new· 👁 Deep purple color· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, tomato leaf, roasted green bell pepper, oak, charcoal, vanilla, licorice, and lavender· 👄 The wine is dry, high acidity, high ripe tannins, medium+ alcohol, and full body. Medium+ length finish of blackberry and licorice· 🔔 This is one of my go to California Cabernet Sauvignon based wines. It's not trying to be Bordeaux. This acidity is something you can only get in California from mountain fruit. If this had Napa on the bottle it would be $80-$100. Luckily for us this is from Lake County and is beautiful mountain fruit that is ripe, but balanced at $27. It punches way above it's weight class.
