1997 Château Pavie - St. Émilion Grand Cru (90 pts) @chateaupavieofficiel · 🙋‍♂️ Do you believe in curses ✨❓· ℹ️ I ask the question as this Bordeaux wine is from 1997 and in the same week I tasted a group of wines from 2007. What do they have in common? They all end in 7. This is referred to as the ✨The curse of the 7️⃣s✨. The supposed curse is due to the widely regarded mediocre vintages of 1967, 1977, 1987, 1997, and 2007. This wine was tasted double so I didn't have these preconceived notions in my head· 🔔 Notes are short due to the large number of wines tasted. This wine had a nose that was very tertiary highlighting oak, herbs, red and black fruit. Clearly oaked and well integrated. A decent amount of acid but tannins were quite resolved already. The alcohol was moderate. Solidly put together, I guessed 1996 St Émilion· 😎 This wine has a noticeable rim showing 15-20 years of age. Fairly restrained across the board. Fruit profile was not fully ripe. Drove me to old world or a cooler vintage. It showed some savory and mineral notes mixed with oak. This was driving me to Bordeaux, Rioja, or Bolgheri. I was missing some of the spice and the oak was very polished, so I went away from Rioja (stereotyping I know). It was very clean so this took me away from Bolgheri. Back to Bordeaux. The structure was too light for Cabernet Sauvignon. Missing more acidity and tannins. This led me to the right bank and Merlot dominant. I landed on St Émilion due thinking there was a fair Cabernet Franc based on pyrazines. As for the year, I landed on 1996 as it was the peak of my age range and then chose the next solid vintage of Bordeaux· In Blind, We Trust 😎
