2012 Kanonkop - Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch (88 pts) @kanonkopwineestate @capeclassicswines @wosa _usa · 🙋‍♂️ Have you had a South African wine lately❓· ℹ️ This wine is from Stellenbosch, South Africa. This is 💯 Cabernet Sauvignon. Vine age is an average 21 years old planted on decomposed granite with high clay content. Fermented in open top concrete vats for 5 days with frequent punch downs. Aged in French oak for 24 months (50% new, 50% 2nd fill)· 👁 Deep ruby color· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of oak, cedar, ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, smokey, and lead pencil· 👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, high coarse tannins, medium+ alcohol, and medium+ body. Medium+ length smokey coffee finish· 🔔 Really solid wine. Oak is really well integrated. Tannins are big, maybe a bit coarse due to punch downs every 2 hours during fermentation. Fruit profile is ripe but not overripe. Well made, classic Cabernet Sauvignon. South Africa is underrated! 🇿🇦· 😎 Single blind - Tasted blind, but knew it was majority Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit was ripe and balanced which was leading me to Bordeux, Bolgheri, or Stellenbosch. Minimal pyrazines which took me out of Chile and Australia. Seemed old world in style (fruit wasn't overtly ripe), picked up a touch of Brett which had me waffling between Bolgheri and Stellenbosch, but went with the latter due to smokiness· In Blind, We Trust 😎
