2017 Big Table Farm - Funk Estate Vineyard Syrah (91 pts)
4/30/2021, 6:15:09 AM 2017 Big Table Farm - Funk Estate Vineyard Syrah (91 pts) @bigtablefarm · ℹ️ This wine is 💯 Syrah from The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA. The Rocks District is a sub-appellation of the Walla Walla Valley AVA of Oregon. The Rocks District is named for a unique alluvial fan in rocky soils resulting in "baseball-sized" basalt cobblestones covering the ground. The Syrah is 💯 whole cluster and native yeast fermentation. Aged for two years in French oak with 25% new oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered· 👁 Medium+ ruby color· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of black pepper, raspberry, boysenberry, lavender, rose, black olives, bacon fat, and coffee grounds· 👄 The wine is dry, medium+ acidity, medium ripe tannins, medium+ alcohol (14.2%), and medium+ body. A medium length finish of raspberry, lavender, and black pepper· 🔔 This Syrah is my first time trying something outside of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Big Table Farm. I tasted this over three days, and by the third day, the wine truly opened up. The first day was blueberries, bacon fat, and black pepper with an emphasis on the meaty character. On the second day, florals came out, and the fruit appeared to be more brambly. My notes above are from the last day of tasting. Simply put, this wine needs more time in bottle or one hell of a decant. I need the explore The Rocks District a bit more soon because it is the only AVA in the United States defined exclusively by soil type· 💰 $48· #vin #lovewine #🍷 #wineterroir #wine
