Merry Edwards Winery “Russian River Valley” Pinot Noir, 2016 - Sonoma, California, USA🇺🇸 Tasted: 24/01-2020 🍇100% Pinot Noir Merry Edwards is a Sonoma County wine pioneer and one of California's first female winemakers (estate established in 1997). Her brand is known for its structured Pinot Noirs, including notable single-vineyard wines. Edwards also makes a small amount of Chardonnay, as well as a quite reputable barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc. Today, the estate is owned by Louis Roederer, Champagne. “In one way or another, all of our wines are blends. For single-vineyard wines, special blocks, clones or barrels may be selected and thoughtfully combined. Likewise, our Russian River Pinot is, in a way, the grandest of our blends, as its goal is to portray the heart of our valley. This Pinot Noir’s kaleidoscopic personality was created by melding five unique vineyards, eight singular clones and 12 individual lots.” - Merry Edwards Winery I’m not very experienced with Sonoma Pinot Noirs, but this is definitely one of the better ones I’ve tried. Extremely ripe appereance (maybe a little too much for a Pinot Noir in my opinion) with a heavy bouquet of plums, blackberry jam and chocolate tart. The oak is quite clear with notes of vanilla and roasted mushrooms. It’s an extremely beautiful nose! The wine is heavy and rich with a palate showing, once again, ripe dark red berries (especially cherry and blackcurrant), dark chocolate and a hint of sweet liquorice. I’ve tried Californian Pinot with better balance (it has a strange acidity - a bit unbalanced to me) - but once again, I’m not very experienced with Sonoma Pinot Noir. An overall exciting experience, but if you’re more into the elegant and light bodied Pinots, I’d recommend something else.
