2016 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc - Pessac-Léognan (93 pts) @smithhautlafitte · ℹ️ The wine is 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon, and 5% Sauvignon Gris from Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux, France. The vines planted to white grapes are just north of the chateau where there is more clay and limestone soils. The average vine is around 40 years old. Since 1993, this is one of the rare chateaux that has an on-site cooperage to control the quality of oak barrels used for their wine. The wine was aged 12 months in French oak barrels with 50% new oak· 👁 Pale lemon color· 👃 Medium+ intensity on the nose. Aromas of lemon peel, lemon custard, grapefruit, baked quince, melon, grilled pineapple, ripe peach, cream, and smoke· 👄 The wine is dry, high zippy acidity, medium+ alcohol, and medium body. A creamy texture. A medium+ length finish of ripe tropical fruit and bitter citrus zest· 🔔 The red was reviewed in the previous post. If I had to choose between the two wines, then it would be this one. This is one of the finest Sauvignon Blanc based wines made in any region today. This wine is absolutely delicious now and will continue to evolve with increasing complexity. The wine has layers of flavors that get exposed with every swirl of the glass. Definitely something to seek out.
